The second episode of the streaming adaptation of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, titled “Second Date,” is a letdown compared to the charming pilot. Even with two big-name guest stars, Paul Dano and John Turturro, this series remains enjoyable because of the stars.

Donald Glover and Maya Erskine have lovely chemistry together. Whether it’s antagonistic or sympathetic moments where they get to know each other, the attraction is obvious. Even though small talk that leads to sexual chemistry is too much to bear, the series also has no issues folding in the star’s comedic talents.

Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) Season 1 Episode 2 Recap: Who is “Hot Neighbor?”

Dano plays “Hot Neighbor,” per IMDB. It’s hard to imagine Dano being typecast in the role, but it’s the eye of the beholder (and the world of make-believe). Dano’s Hot Neighbor approaches Jane before she walks into her lavish brownstone home. He asks if she has a cat.

She denies it, which is a lie. Why is he asking? Well, a cat is pooping all over his lawn. Why does he care? Well, what if his dog starts eating cat crap? Jane responds with a “dame”-like quick wit, perhaps to “train your dog not to eat sh*t,” and they smile at each other.

They part ways, saying goodbye with flirtatious grins. When Jane returns, she tells John the neighbor is hot. Is Jane trying to make John jealous? Even after turning down his “generous” offer for sex? (I’m a guy; if we offer sex, we think it’s generous.) They get ready for their next mission with a message from Hihi.

Who is Eric Shane?

Hihi is assigned a mission to track an art collector named Blank. John and Jane have to attend a black-tie event. This is a silent auction, and they must dress to impress, per Hihi. Mr. and Mrs. Smith must identify the high bidder of “Warhol Silver Car Crash.” Step two is to administer a single dose of truth serum. Hihi asks to record all the information they give the spy couple.

The rules are for “no calculations.”ABSOLUTELY NO WITNESSES.” John and Jane arrive; he’s in a tuxedo, and she’s in a red evening gown. John decides he should go in as catering at the last minute. This way, he can move around more because people will notice a “black guy” moving around among other people. They identify Eric Shane (Turturro), who spent $106 million on Warhol.

Shane doesn’t respond to Jane’s advances. Jane guesses he’s attracted to holding power over others. She suggests they grab a server (John) and do whatever they want to him. Shane makes both bark like dogs. While Shane is on all fours doing, uh, canine things, they both stab him with the truth serum, a Hihi violation. This proves they are still getting to know one another’s body language.

Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 1 Episode 2 Ending Explained:  How does Eric Shane die?

Mr. & Mrs. Smith ends with Shane dying from an overdose of truth serum. John and Jane attempt to find the “green” antidote. This is after admitting things from his life about being lonely and being in love once. Shane even seems to infer he knows what Mr. & Mrs Smith does, making us wonder if his ex-lover may have made up an older version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith from decades past.

John and Jane decide to bury Shane in the backyard compost. It turns out to be harder than they thought. Like, breaking legs in their bathtub is not as fun as John thought it would be. After giving Shane his dirt nab, something tells me the spring roses will be an extra boss this April; they watch television together. Jane then gives John the green light for sex, and he takes it.

What does Hihi threaten?

While having sex, Hihi messages John and Jane that MISSION FAILED. One fail. Two fails remain.
