The fourth episode of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, titled “Double Date,” is creative, fun, and a bit of a mystery. Much of that credit should go to writer Adamma Ebo (Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul) and director Christian Sprenger. Donald Glover’s cinematographer in Atlanta can capture intimate moments with comedic touches and dark, irreverent moments that separate this from the original.

When the episode starts, John and Jane walk around the local farmer’s market. John runs into an old girlfriend with her six-year-old son. Jane looks a bit bothered. I found it strange that John didn’t try to avoid her since he was supposed to abandon his old life.

Moments later, Jane tells John how much she respects him for dating a woman with one hand. John argues that isn’t the case, but Jane convinces him what a cad he must have been because their relationship was purely physical. While waiting for orange juice, John sees “Hot Neighbor” and is talking to him. Then John meets someone with similar tastes and interests.

Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: Who is Other John Smith?

John argues with the juice guy that this green drink is not his, even though it says John Smith. That’s when a handsome gentleman comes up and says that must be his. He also adds that he saw someone take his orange juice earlier.

He offers to buy him one and pulls out a credit card (it must be like John’s because even though he already knows the name, he sees it and makes the connection). John Smith is just like him and works at the company. John (Narcos’s Wagner Moura) and John (Donald Glover) hit it off famously. He introduces John to his “wife,” Jane (Maya Erskine).

For some reason, again, this doesn’t send off alarm bells at this chance encounter. However, it looks like our Mr. and Mrs. Smith are just relieved to find someone like them. The “Other” John wants to have dinner with them, but I find it strange how he invites himself over to their place.

Why Are Other John and Jane “Super High Risk?”

Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s new friends are “super high-risk” agents because the jobs pay more and can be exciting. When they arrive, they drink, eat, and enjoy the night. Glover and Erskine’s titular characters are fascinated by their new friends because they are “super high-risk” agents and have survived this long. Moura’s John noted how the current Jane wasn’t his first.

He doesn’t explain, but infers that she died. The storyline is a way to foreshadow John and Jane’s future as they contemplate where they want to go in their careers—low risk, high risk, or super high risk. John seems to want to transition into low-risk mode later. Jane feels she could never do such a thing. Their new friends laugh about leaving the company once they make enough money, saying they would never be that open-minded and have a dark laugh.

I kept waiting for something sinister to happen, thinking this was a big trap. When they have dessert, John asks them about their riskiest cases. Moura’s character comments that they had to sneak into a Russian prison with no weapons or backup plan. He said the key was “breathing,” while Other Jane says the ability to think on your feet will get you through the most dangerous situations.

Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 1 Episode 4 Ending Explained: Why does Jane lie to John about his ex’s hand?

This was strange to me and I had to rewind. She does have two hands, but John does. At the end of the episode, John looks at his ex’s social media account. He she has both appendages. It’s another example of the mind games Jane loves. This is after their new friends invited our John and Jane on a super high-risk mission after drinking.

When they get to the helicopter, Moura and Posey’s characters suddenly do not board and tell them to have fun. John and Jane are worried. When they arrive, they are held at gunpoint because this is not what John and Jane were expecting. Glover’s John tells Erskine’s Jane that he loves her. They then must fight their way out with machetes, killing the captain.

Other John apologizes to John for the mishap and gives them the payment instead of splitting it by $375,000. They get home and shower, and that’s when John realizes Jane was lying about the “hand.” They laugh and he’s impressed with her untruth-telling technique. In bed, Jane confirms he loves.
