The fifth episode of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, titled “Do You Want Kids,” is the best of the season, with a great guest spot from Hellboy’s Ron Pearlman. In the episode, we see the relationship progress into full comfort mode.

Jane gently teases John. John laughs as they hold hands and drive through the Italian countryside. However, the serene mood and views soon give way to the most action-packed version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith yet.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) Season 1 Episode 5 Recap: Who is Toby Hellinger?

We aren’t sure who Toby Hellinger is or what he does. Even by the end of the episode, when he offers his role with the company, John says they don’t have to know. What we do know is that Hihi orders John and Jane to “Travel to Lake Como, Italy. Secure a highly valued target, Tobey Hellinger. Await further instructions. Thanks.” When they arrive at Tobey’s home, he’s drinking and has five lines of cocaine to snort.

In short, Tobey is a dumpster fire. John and Jane put a cloak over Tobey’s head and drove him to a safe house. However, when they arrive, they are ambushed by a half-dozen armed assassins equipped with tactical gear and machine guns. What happens next is a car chase through Italy. Including driving through an Italian wedding and ruining the nuptials because of the gun battle that ensues.

They must abandon the car, and you’ll notice Pearlman’s Tobey isn’t making a great effort to survive. This makes us think he may want to die. They eventually escape to safety, paying for a ride on someone’s boat. They arrive at another safe house that Jane was not aware of. John, though, knows the code to get in the home.

What does John buy?

It turns out that John bought himself and Jane a home on Lake Como. Jane is taken aback but reasonably upset because he made such a big decision without consulting her. Toby chimes in that, coming from someone with too much money, you still must be careful how you spend it, especially regarding foreign real estate.

He then proceeds to drop a stick of dynamite on the floor and pick it up on the mantle. No one seems to wonder why dynamite, which you know can roll, is in the home, let alone on a mantle. John (Donald Glover) doesn’t like Toby very much.

Toby becomes ill but refuses to take his medications. John promised him a cigarette if he took it but after dinner. When Toby inquires about the cancer stick, John says he lied. Toby walks up to John after Mr. Smith pulls his gun, and Toby becomes angry. He presses his chest up to the barrel—another sign of suicidal ideation. Toby then cries and goes to bed.

What does Hihi tell Jane?

Hihi asks, “Jane, do you have a chance to talk?” The conversation continues: “The safe house was compromised; we had to relocate.” Standby for transport instructions,” Hihi replies. “Okay. Jane, do you have a chance to talk?” Jane asks, “Sure, should I grab John?”

Hihi says, “No, that’s okay. Jane, are you happy?” “With work?” “With everything,” Hihi asks. Jane says, “Yes, I am. John’s a great partner.” Hihi replies, “Good. We see you advancing.” The conversation ends with Hihi ordering, “Keep Toby alive until the morning. He is critical to the company. Keep up the good work, Jane.”

After dinner, Hihi sends Jane a message with coordinates in the middle of Lake Como. A seaplane will arrive to pick Toby up. Jane asks how they will know when they arrive. Hihi says, “We will know.” Also, ask, “Have you found this mission challenging?” Jane replies, “It hasn’t been the easiest. But that’s to be expected.” “Am John?”

Hihi inquires. Jane states, “Sometimes John and I handle things differently. But we’re making do.” “Yes. John is your partner.” Hihi states. John and Jane can drop off Toby for his escape after the assassins track them down at John’s new home. To escape, Jane put dynamite on the stove’s open flame, blowing up the house. Is this a metaphor for Jane blowing up their relationship?

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 1 Episode 5 Ending Explained:  Why does John think Jane is pregnant?

John said that Jane refused wine, told a man she was pregnant to get the boat, felt sick to the ship, and was maternal with Toby. Also, the night before dropping off Toby, the couple went through some vows. John promises to take allergy medication because of Jane’s cat. John promises Jane that he will not kill her. In the world of spies posing as a couple, it’s like saying, “I love you unconditionally.”

Hihi asks, “Do you feel you’re expected to have a child?” “John wants me to,” she replies. “I think what you expect of yourself is most important, Jane.” “I appreciate that,” Jane replies. Hihi then says something that takes Jane aback: “We think you’re ready to go up a level.”
