Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024) Season 1 Episode 7 Recap: Who is the “Therapist?”

Veteran stage and screen actress Sarah Paulson plays “Therapist,” a psychiatrist who offers marital therapy to Mr. and Mrs. Smith. John and Jane come to see her at her “dream” home. She’s a pompous, woke woman whom John (Donald Glover) and Jane make fun of after each session.

The thing about the therapy sessions is that they cannot tell the Therapist what their specific jobs are. So, they tell her what they tell everyone. They are software engineers. However, the therapist is not dumb. She struggles to understand why they have to work so much on the same projects.

Also, no more boundaries are set between them on a professional level. However, the Therapist also sees the apparent problem. The job is the issue. The worlds of professional and personal are bleeding together and blurring the lines.

Why does John say Hihi favors Jane?

John tells the Therapist that he feels their boss favors Jane. Also, Jane talks down to John, emasculates him, and always inserts herself to control the situation. They tell the Therapist a story about a meeting where John was to close a deal. Jane grew impatient with John’s patience when it came to his psychotherapy techniques. She feels it should have taken a few moments.

Instead, it was 40 minutes with John playing the part. During the covert operation, Jane felt John was a different person. He would act with machismo. She also thought he was racist against her own Asian culture with sexist locker room-like comments. So, instead of letting John play it out like he wanted, what does Jane do? She shoots all four in the head of the person John was talking to.

Why? Well, as she explains, she was hungry. As the sessions continue, you’ll notice that John and Jane keep sitting further apart. They practice what the Therapist tells them on another mission, but Jane is particularly cruel to John in this flashback about his family and manhood. John also gets very personal, talking about how Jane has no feelings because of her father.

John and Jane crossed some lines that you can never come back from.
