In the first episode of his Netflix documentary Arnold, the actor shares how he moved to Munich, Germany, in 1966 and lived inside a gym. He also spoke about the friends he made at the gym who later helped him buy an airplane ticket to participate in the Mr. Universe competition.
“I mean, how lucky of a son of a B**ch I am to have the gym to be my home? I then developed my own little family, which was Albert Busek and Franco Columbu, who I met the year before in Stuttgart. He was the perfect training partner… My friends helped me to raise money for an airplane ticket to compete in the Mr. Universe contest.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger explains how his life changed after a few months of getting out of the military and joining a gym. He also says that his goal was to make it to the top six contestants of the Mr. Universe contest.
“So imagine, just a few months before, you’re in the military. And now you’re traveling to London to go to the Mr. Universe contest. My goal was to place in the top six, but I placed second at the age of 19. And I said, ‘Oh my god, if I’m winning second as this little farm boy from Austria that has no experience, next year I’m gonna win.'”
