Dr. Dre is one of the most influential music producers of the 2000s, having unearthed rappers such as Eminem and 50 Cent. After rising to stardom as a rapper during the early 90s, Dr. Dre has been focused on his career as a producer over the last couple of decades, leaving a lasting impact on the hip-hop genre.
Dr. Dre recently appeared on a talk show, where he discussed his work in hip-hop, particularly as a producer. At the same time, he addressed the possibility of working in other genres and collaborating with new artists. Dr. Dre responded candidly to dabbling in genres outside of hip-hop and also revealed the one artist he would love to collaborate with.
Dr. Dre Reveals His Condition For Working in Genres Other Than Hip-Hop
Music producer and rapper Dr. Dre recently received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles, Shortly after achieving the major milestone in showbiz, Dre appeared on an episode of the late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live, where he shared a retrospective look on his career.
During his conversation with host Kimmel, Dre was asked whether he would be interested in working outside the hip-hop genre. In response, Dre admitted that hip-hop was his one true love but he would be willing to work in other genres on condition.
“My love is with hip-hop. It really depends on the relationship if I meet somebody that you know we click and what have you then I’ll go in a studio and get down.”
Dre made the above statement revealing that he would only work with artists from other genres if he clicked with them and formed a connection. While Dre reiterated that hip-hop was his love, he clarified that the genre of music would not prevent him from collaborating with other artists.
Dr. Dre Shares Desire to Collaborate with Dolly Parton
In his conversation with Kimmel, the eight-time Grammy Award-winning rapper and producer was also asked about the artists from other genres he would like to collaborate with. Kimmel threw a curve ball at Dr. Dre by asking the producer whether he would be interested in working with country music legend Dolly Parton.
“Love Dolly Parton. Yes, absolutely. Jolene is one of my favorite songs.”
Dre made the above statement professing his love for Parton’s work while also confirming that he would love to work with the eleven-time Grammy Award winner. During his appearance on the talk show, Dre also discussed his process as a producer and detailed his hands-on approach.
“I’d like it to be a collaborative effort and once the track is them we’re collaborating with the lyrics.”
Thus, Dr. Dre’s conversation with Kimmel made it pretty clear that should the right opportunity present itself Dre would be willing to branch out of the hip-hop genre, albeit on his terms.
Aside from his music career, Dre is also a successful businessman, who co-founded Beats Electronics in 2006. The brand was later purchased by Apple making Dre then allegedly the richest man in hip-hop with an estimated net worth of $500 Million. Dre was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2024, followed by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in March.
