If you are one of the fans excitedly awaiting the next Call of Duty game to be released by Activision later this year, you may be surprised to learn some NBA players have already tried it. Activision has been showcasing their upcoming title at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, allowing future basketball prospects a chance to experience the first person shooter before it comes out.
So if you were one of those gamers hoping to get a crack at the 2023 Call of Duty game before newly drafted NBA players such as Victor Wembanyama, Jalen Hood-Schifino, Brandon Miller, and more, you might be disappointed. Although we have no details on exactly which NBA players have experienced the 2023 Call of Duty game, you can bet many of them were asking for a chance to play. If you are unfamiliar with the NBA Summer League happening now, it’s a fairly straightforward annual event. The NBA draft happened on June 22 and was an opportunity for teams to pick up athletes with major potential. There were 58 players selected in total between the first and second rounds. The summer league is a chance for newly drafted players or G League competitors to try out different lineups before the regular season begins. Often times newly recruited college athletes need a chance to experience this next level of competition before stadiums are sold out. It is also an opportunity for head coaches to strategize before mixing new talent with the seasoned professionals.
Why Would Activision Want NBA Players to Experience the Call of Duty 2023 Game Before the Rest of the World?
If you find yourself wondering why newly drafted NBA players are getting to play the next Call of Duty before you, there are a few potential reasons.
Many are suspecting the Call of Duty title Activision will be dropping this Fall is Modern Warfare 3. If this is the case, Activision surely wants to get insight into the story and gameplay before anything is released to the public. The end of Modern Warfare 2 (2022) hinted at a third title and a highly controversial mission from the original Modern Warfare 2 called, “No Russian.” If Activision intends to remake content it expects could be viewed negatively, there would certainly be an incentive to test it with some sort of audience first.

Given the fact NBA players already have to deal with confidentialities in their own contracts, they may be the perfect test group for Activision. It is something to consider that these athletes probably fit the age and gender demographics most likely to purchase the next Call of Duty game, so it could be a logical next step. If maintaining secrecy and observing a target audience are the primary intention of the 2023 Call of Duty developer, this may not be the last time we see NBA players trying new titles. NBA players are also likely to create massive hype for the product when it releases and could use their platforms to promote it for advertising purposes.
As the year continues, we will see if Activision has an even greater plan in store for testing with the NBA, or if it was all just a convenient closed-door beta test.
