Netflix is gearing up for 2023, it already has a list of projects that will release this year under the latest round of California’s tax credit program 18 films have qualified out of which four of them are big-budget films. These films will employ close to 2650 crew members and involve 600 actors, with a production cost of $915 million approx. One of these projects is by the director of Justice League, Zack Snyder.
After the release of an extended Justice League, the director went to Netflix with a project he has been developing for a long time named Rebel Moon, we saw a glimpse of it in Netflix’s teaser for 2023. The movie will be released in two parts but does it need two films? The executives at Netflix are confident that it does. In an extended interview with Variety, Kira Goldberg and Ori Marmur explained why they could go ahead with two movies.
Rebel Moon will be Zack Snyder’s take on Star Wars
Kira Goldberg and Ori Marmur were asked about working with Zack Snyder and what gave them the confidence to make two movies back to back. Marmur said that he believes in Snyder and his vision, having worked with the director on two projects previously Marmur feels that Snyder will pull it off.
“Zack came in with so much passion. This is a film that he’s had in mind for decades. As you know, he’s spent so much time working on other people’s IP at other studios. We worked with him on “Army of the Dead” and we did things that others couldn’t do. We made a film and then a prequel and launched a live experience.”
The runner of Netflix’s original studio also related to the director’s confidence and passion, he feels that Zack Snyder wants to push the envelope and create a universe of his own, like Star Wars. It is a risky move because the second film will go into production even before the first film is released, maybe Netflix should have waited to asses how the audience receives the first film.

“With Rebel Moon, he wanted to push the envelope again. When we saw how big the world he created was, we thought it would be better served as two pieces versus one film. It’s the kind of story that can continue to grow. He thinks of it as his take on making something like Star Wars.”
Rebel Moon is said to be Netflix’s biggest project this year, the film revolves around farming villagers who decide to fight the evil army led by tyrannical Belisarius. Kora a young woman is sent on a mission to find warriors who can battle the invader.

Only after the release of the film will we know if Rebel Moon needed two films or if it was Snyder’s obsession with long films that pushed Netflix to green-light both movies without assessing the response for the first one.
