Netflix landed another superhit series in November 2022 with the horror comedy Wednesday. The series went on to be one of the biggest hits on the streaming platform. It overtook Stranger Things as the most-viewed series in its first week of release by scoring over 400 million hours of view time within the first week of its release. Given the massive success of the show, there is no doubt that the streaming giant would renew the series for another season.
However, Netflix has still not released an official announcement for the renewal of the series. Fans are wondering why it’s taking so long for the streaming giant to renew the series, despite it being one of the biggest shows on its platform.
Amazon May Snatch Wednesday Season 2 From Netflix
The Netflix show featuring Jenna Ortega, Wednesday, is produced by MGM Television. Netflix took over the project planned by the American filmmaker Tim Burton and creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar in February 2021. After this, the show went into production under MGM Television.
However, in May 2021, Amazon announced its acquisition deal with MGM and closed it in March 2022. Amazon acquired MGM for $8.5 billion in 2022. With MGM now under its rival streaming platform, it is assumed that Netflix could lose one of its biggest shows to Prime Video.
And this could be the reason it has not officially renewed the series for a second season. While there is no doubt about the show’s renewal, there is still confusion about where it will be released.
According to Deadline, sources expect the renewal to be announced in 2023. The producers of the show have started approaching writers and have also started discussing the locations for Wednesday Season 2.
Although nothing is confirmed yet, many believe that Prime Video would not hesitate to take over one of the biggest shows of its rival streaming platform.
Where Will Wednesday Season 2 be Released?
According to Deadline, Amazon is not planning to claim the whole MGM content for the exclusive series or film on Prime Video. Sources have claimed that the company will look for specific MGM shows and movies to remake or reboot as Prime Video exclusives in the future.
This could include the James Bond film series. It is assumed that Amazon could plan to sign a deal with Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson in order to develop a James Bond TV series in the future.
However, there is a possibility that Amazon and Netflix will strike a deal to keep Wednesday Season 2 on Netflix. One source said, “[Amazon], truthfully, is in business with everybody and is expected to continue to do that in multiple dimensions.”
However, nothing has been confirmed yet. MGM Television already has a project with Apple, and taking advantage of the situation Amazon could continue to engage in business with its rivals after the acquisition of MGM.
Wednesday is available to stream on Netflix.
