When Ricky Gervais took the Golden Globes stage for the fifth time as host in 2020, he made it clear to his influential and famous audience that he didn’t care about the event at all and that he’s behind the mic to have a laugh at their expense.

His monologue included digs at Felicity Huffman, Martin Scorsese, and Judi Dench among others. He also made the audience groan by quipping that Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself and that he’s their friend before insisting, “I don’t care.”

Stand-up comedian Jo Koy took charge of making the Golden Globes audience laugh only 10 days before the ceremony.

This isn’t a scoop. Koy himself revealed the details after his joke about Barbie’s b-obs didn’t take off. “I got the gig 10 days ago!” he yelled before throwing his writers under the bus.

Then he tried to make the audience laugh at the expense of Taylor Swift, “The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.”

The only thing it generated was a cold reaction from the singer and a pin-drop silence, eerily similar to the tense moment before the Trinity Test in Oppenheimer. Koy also quipped that the documentary feature was too long. Since everyone had heard the information 100 times before, they didn’t care to laugh at this either.

While Selena Gomez looked down in disappointment, fans on social media took this opportunity to once again remember Ricky Gervais‘ hilarious gig.

Interestingly, Gervais still managed to pull a much more hilarious joke than whatever Koy delivered last night.

How Ricky Gervais Played a Joke on the Golden Globes

The After Life creator didn’t shy away from burning any bridges in his fifth and final Golden Globes hosting gig. However, he was still named the winner of the ceremony’s first-ever award for Best Performance in Stand-up Comedy on Television.

The honor came for his Netflix special Armageddon, which has received plenty of backlash for jokes about terminally ill children. The comedian has always maintained his jokes are part of the character he’s playing on stage rather than his real-life beliefs.

The 62-year-old, who repeatedly claimed he didn’t care about the event in 2020, apparently stayed true to his words and didn’t show up to collect the historic award. Never change, Ricky!
