The recent round of GTA leaks has revealed even more details about unannounced and canceled projects by Rockstar Games, including an unannounced title named GTA Tokyo. GTA 5 source code leaked a few days ago, revealing that several titles were shelved for the studio to concentrate on Grand Theft Auto Online.

A Bully sequel, a modern version of Midnight Club, and another game titled Agent were on the canceled games list. There were expansions for GTA 5, including eight DLCs, which disappointed fans. A GTA game set in Tokyo was also uncovered, which would have come out for PlayStation 2. The actual reasons behind the cancellation of titles by Rockstar will never be known.

GTA Tokyo Is Among the Cancelled GTA Titles

Cancelling GTA Tokyo may have been a missed opportunity, especially after Chinatown Wars' success.

A well-known GTA leaker posted a screenshot uncovered from the recent GTA source code leaks, which seems to confirm GTA Tokyo being under development for PlayStation 2. This was said to be around the late 2000s, when rumors of a GTA game set in Tokyo were going around.

It was also around this time that Rockstar North is said to have started developing Grand Theft Auto 5, in 2008, to be specific. GTA 5 was under development for the next five years until late 2013, when the game went Gold. To concentrate more on Grand Theft Auto 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online developments, Rockstar is said to have scrapped a bunch of these titles, including Grand Theft Auto Tokyo.

PlayStation 2 received the franchise’s 3D universe titles, which included Grand Theft Auto 3, GTA: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and a couple of PSP titles as well that were ported to the console: Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories. All of these titles were massively successful on all the platforms that they were released. All of this only makes fans wonder why Rockstar left money on the table by scrapping Grand Theft Auto Tokyo.

There’s nothing else known about the canceled Grand Theft Auto Tokyo title, as the screenshot only mentions dynamic and generic elements like the interiors, vehicle mods, and maps. A lot of these PlayStation 2 titles have stood the test of time, with remastered versions releasing recently that look even better than the original with the upgrades.

As for the rest of the leaks, there have been plenty of unreleased Grand Theft Auto 5 DLC details, along with other Rockstar titles as well.

Other Titles Fans Hoped Rockstar Had Not Canceled

Fans have been hoping to get a Bully sequel for years only to learn it was once considered but scrapped.

Grand Theft Auto 5 not getting a story DLC has also infuriated several fans, even more so now that several ideas were being considered. GTA 5 Liberty City DLC was one of those mentioned in the leaks, along with a Prologue, an SP Enterprise Pack, a Relationship Pack, an SP Norman Pack, an Agent Trevor Pack, an Enterprise Pack, an Assassination Pack, and a Manhunt Pack.

The leaks also contained two secret or unused endings to the Grand Theft Auto 5 campaign. The leaks mentioned alternative ways (spoiler alert) two of the main characters lost their lives by the end of the story. The main story anyway ended up being liked by fans the way it was, with some memorable missions in between and also a memorable ending.

Bully was a fan-favorite title by Rockstar, and a sequel never came through, which fans expected and hoped would arrive for a long time. So, when Bully 2 was mentioned in the recent leaks, fans were surprised Rockstar didn’t go through with it. A bunch of concept artwork was also included among the leaked content that showed how the open world may have looked.

Fans on both Reddit and X have expressed their disappointment, as the sequel may never see the light of day. Others mentioned how Rockstar could have still worked on bringing some of these titles to life, along with GTA 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online, without scrapping one title for another.

Another massive studio, Naughty Dog, recently decided to drop its live-service online games to concentrate more on single-player titles, in which it has shined so far. Rockstar, on the other hand, decided to concentrate on Grand Theft Auto Online development, adding more content to the online edition, leading to titles being killed off.

Rockstar Games is bringing out GTA 6 next year, and there’s a high expectation of another online edition that could follow a year or two later. For now, fans continue to feel disappointed about missed opportunities with the canceled projects by Rockstar Games, even if there’s no way to tell what may have gone so wrong for the studio to discard them.
