After plenty of criticism about the Assassin’s Creed franchise losing its original path of stealthy assassinations, Ubisoft went back to its roots with last year’s Mirage, which was appreciated by many fans since it was a welcome breath of fresh air that took a detour from the recent bloated RPG elements of the series. Fans had also been asking for a Feudal Japan-set game for years as well, and the studio listened, which is where Codename Red comes in.

There isn’t much that’s been officially revealed about the title till now except for a very few basic details, but the consistent leaks that the upcoming game goes through provide more than enough information about what to expect from the first Japanese AC.

Ubisoft announced Assassin’s Creed Red as a surprise for fans who tuned in to the franchise’s 2022 Showcase, but after that, things got a lot quieter regarding the Japan-set title. The game has gone through various leaks since then, including one that seemingly revealed a potential female protagonist.

In November 2023, an extremely reliable leaker called j0nathan revealed plenty of new details about the upcoming AC on his YouTube channel, including information about its supposed map size as compared to previous recent entries in the series.

The video is actually in French, so if one knows the language, it can be checked out in full detail, but for those who are not, this is the new information j0nathan revealed based on translations. Firstly, Assassin’s Creed Red will supposedly have fewer map markers, which seems to be a complete detour from recent AC titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.

Similar to how FromSoftware games do not hold the hand of players to get them through different levels, the Japanese entry in the AC franchise will also feature much less guidance than ever before.

Only time and potential closed beta tests will tell if these changes are easily accepted by the community or shunned enough to be changed upon release. The second bit of major information that j0nathan shared was about the supposed map size of the game, which will lie in the middle of the ones from the aforementioned RPG titles in the series.

Which means that Assassin’s Creed Red could feature a relatively bigger map than Valhalla‘s, but it will not be as massively bloated as the one from Odyssey, which received a bit of backlash because of how lifeless the huge world mostly was.

Ubisoft May Also Introduce Some New Gameplay Changes

Assassin's Creed Red could feature some new gameplay changes on top of a bigger map than Valhalla's.

Supposedly taking yet another inspiration from a FromSoftware title, Assassin’s Creed Red‘s first new gameplay feature seems to be a grappling hook, similar to the one from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Ubisoft is also potentially being inspired by various other games like Metal Gear Solid when it comes to introducing prone abilities.

Since the AC franchise and stealth go hand in hand, the upcoming Japanese title in the series will apparently let players take cover in various types of grass for quieter and more efficient assassinations.

Ubisoft also seems to be taking some bits from its own catalog, which is a nice feature from Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series that allows players to disappear into dark areas or shadows while also granting them the ability to turn torches off for better cover against enemies.

Assassin’s Creed Red will seemingly introduce some new gadgets as well that will fit the Japanese aesthetic and the Shinobi protagonist. These will include shuriken and kunai, as well as a couple of traditional ones such as bells and smoke bombs.

Moreover, for those players who like to attack NPCs, there is some bad news, as the ones in Assassin’s Creed Red will actually fight back.
