A recent Reuters report lines up with an earlier Switch 2 leak that the console will arrive sooner than what was predicted. Reporting on the new business unit by NVIDIA to expand its work on AI and cloud computing, there was reference to Nintendo’s Switch 2 chip preference and a possible release schedule.
Rumors of a Nintendo Switch 2 release have been making the rounds for quite a while now, along with predictions about the handheld console’s processing power and display technology. The Reuters report also touched upon the other firms that have been in touch with NVIDIA to get custom AI chips.
Reuters Report Seemingly Confirms a Switch 2 Leak
While discussing NVIDIA’s new business unit being built to focus on designing bespoke chips for AI, cloud computing firms, and others, the report mentioned NVIDIA’s customers who will gain from the new business unit, with Nintendo being one of them.
Nintendo’s current-gen handheld console, Switch and Switch OLED already has NVIDIA’s Tegra X1 chip, and is now reportedly expecting to integrate an upgraded and advanced version of the same for the next version of the console.
While no other details are mentioned, the report does mention an update to the Switch console is likely expected this year. An earlier leak by Digital Foundry suggested the T234 chipset by NVIDIA being lined up for use with the Switch 2.
Leaked reports from the FTC v. Microsoft hearings suggest the Switch successor will have a performance close to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, so now there’s high expectation from the upgraded NVIDIA.
Microsoft and Google Also Reportedly Partnering with NVIDIA
OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Meta are all reportedly in talks with NVIDIA to stock up on its chips and stay ahead in the generative AI sector. NVIDIA’s AI processors, H100 and A100 are known to serve all-purpose requirements for its customers. This was corroborated by two anonymous sources to Reuters, who confirmed NVIDIA has met with officials from said firms.
Broadcom and Marvell Technology were both revealed by an anonymous source to Reuters as having developed custom AI chips through NVIDIA already, although the price for the chips is not known at the moment.
Going beyond AI, NVIDIA is also reportedly working with Ericsson for a wireless chip for the telecom infrastructure sector. However, there has been no announcement or a comment about the partnership that will see NVIDIA integrate its Graphics Processing Unit technology into the chips built for Ericsson.
Switch 2 is rumored heavily to feature a bigger and upgraded OLED screen by Samsung. There has been no comment or hints by Nintendo about the Reuters report, or the other leaks yet, but whenever an official announcement drops, it’s bound to hype Nintendo fans around the world.
