Landing a role in a Marvel film requires a special skill set that not everyone has. Nicholas Hoult, who assumed the role of Beast as Kelsey Grammer’s departure in the X-Men franchise, did something unusual to impress the casting team. Hoult reportedly used his Family Guy impressions during the audition.
Having portrayed the blue mutant in X-Men: First Class and reprising his role in three sequel films, Hoult, during a GQ interview, opened up about the unique casting process. It seems that his journey to grabbing the role was nothing close to usual.
Family Guy Helped Nicholas Hoult Land The Coveted Role
Nicholas Hoult revealed that during the casting process, Matthew Vaughn asked him to perform some takes in an American accent while portraying the character and also mimic Stewie Griffin from Family Guy. Being an avid viewer of Family Guy, Hoult was confident in his ability to mimic the character. Hoult said, reflecting on the experience, that this unconventional casting approach might have helped him land the role of Beast, although he wasn’t sure about it.
Hoult told GQ:
“Matthew Vaughn asked me to do a couple of takes in an American accent as you kind of saw the character. But then also do a take doing an impression of Stewie Griffin from Family Guy. I had watched a lot of Family Guy in my teen years growing up, so I was like, ‘OK, I think I’ve got a pretty good impression of Stewie Griffin lined up. And so I did a whole version of the take as Stewie Griffin and sent it off. So maybe that helped me get the part? I don’t know.”
There’s no confirmation on whether Nicholas Hoult will reprise the role of Beast in future projects. Disney has taken over Fox, which means that the X-Men franchise might start fresh to bring all characters to the MCU, which previously operated from the X-Men films.

Nicholas Hoult Had an Unusual Interview For Another Film
In the film The Favorite, the story is centered around the dynamics between Emma Stone’s Abigail and Rachel Weisz’s Sarah Churchill. Nicholas Hoult assumed the role of Robert Harley, the Leader of the Opposition, who used parliamentary pressure to get what he wanted. However, the actor’s casting process for the film involved a peculiar and unrelated audition.
He said (via USA Today):
“Yorgos asked me to hum while the person I was with said their lines. Then I had to imagine force fields around the room and sculpt them into things.”
The unconventional process did not stop at the audition and were extended to the rehearsals, The New York Times reported. During this time, the cast members played several games, such as contorting themselves into knots and jumping from carpet tilt to tile. This was done for a duration of three weeks.
