During the Xbox Business Update last week, Phil Spencer made the announcement that four exclusives were chosen to be released on rival consoles, revealing the titles two days ago. Pentiment was released on the PlayStation 5, and Hi-Fi Rush is expected to be released on the PS5 on March 18.

Grounded and Sea of Thieves are coming to the PS5 on April 16th and 30th, respectively. Sea of Thieves coming to a PlayStation console will be especially significant given Rare Limited’s 30-year history. Canadian video game journalist Geoff Keighley dropped a post on X about the title coming to PlayStation 5, and the post received over 240 replies.

Microsoft acquired Sea of Thieves developer Rare Limited back in 2002. Before the acquisition, the studio developed many titles for Nintendo consoles. It wasn’t until Rare released Grabbed by the Ghoulies that the studio released a title for the Xbox.

Sea of Thieves remains a fan-favorite multiplayer title as Rare Limited continues to bring post-launch content, almost six years after its launch. Geoff Keighley posted on X about the significant release on the PS5 console, as Sea of Thieves marks the first title by Rare to come to a Sony platform. Rare Ltd. also posted about the upcoming release of Sea of Thieves on PS5, stating that there’s “never been a better time” for the game to be enjoyed by even more players.

Several fans replied to Keighley and mentioned other titles they wished to see switch over to the PS5. This fan replied to the post by Rare Ltd. by asking if there was any chance Rare Replay would make it to the PS5 too.

Another fan questioned why Sea of Thieves isn’t coming to Switch. It’s not yet clear if there will be Xbox exclusives coming to Switch in the future as part of the new strategy.

When Phil Spencer announced taking exclusives to rival platforms, he mentioned the titles would be coming “to other consoles.” With the announcement being made about those specific four titles coming to PS5, there’s still speculation that Switch could also receive either the same or some of those four titles or another exclusive title altogether.

Among other titles that fans hope to see get ported to PS5, Banjo-Kazooie was wished by fans to make its way to the PS5. A lot of others wished to have older titles ported to the Nintendo Switch. Spencer had clarified that there would be no changes to the overall Xbox strategy despite the decision taken about sending four exclusives to other consoles.

Sea of Thieves could be on the way to becoming a successful live-service game on the PS5 at a time when other similar games are struggling. Helldivers 2 is the most successful live-service title available on the PlayStation 5, and adding Sea of Thieves will allow players to try out another equally successful multiplayer game.
