Nintendo Switch users may find harmony in the fact that Nintendo Switch 2 is in the works, based on sources that hint at a possible patent that has been filed for the console. According to this claim, the console has a dual-screen that splits in half and turns into two different handheld devices.
Given the Switch’s popularity, it’s evident how curious the community has been about the next generation of consoles from Nintendo. After all, the Switch is one of the highest-selling consoles ever made.
Nintendo Switch 2 May Take Notes From Familiar Console Design
Based on leaks and rumours, the new console’s design is strikingly similar to that of the 3DS. However, the catch here is that this device splits into two halves, giving them touchscreen access that improves interaction and experience even when the device is completely shut.
If this design decision is indeed true, classic games from the 2DS and 3DS can be relived (or remastered) for a newer generation of gamers. Moreover, according to insiders at Gamescom, the console could even feature AR/VR functionality, giving developers a chance to experiment with newer forms of game design that haven’t been experimented with in the past.
From the images, it seems like the console is handheld only, which is a slight departure from Switch’s design philosophy. However, all of this is only speculation so far and doesn’t confirm the final outcome. For all we know, Nintendo is great at subverting expectations. The Nintendo Switch 2 will likely have a smooth transition into a new era of gaming for Nintendo.
Moreover, the Switch has lately been enjoying six years’ worth of fame as new exclusives like Super Mario Bros. Wonder and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom keep improving standards for innovation in game development and how players enjoy Nintendo exclusives. The latest patent hints at Nintendo’s future plans and how it decides to make the best of modern technology.
The Nintendo Community Is Eager to Know Any Details Surrounding the New Console
Shuntaro Furukawa, in an interview with Nikkei (translated by VGC), was asked about Switch’s life cycle. The president of Nintendo explained how Nintendo will continue to support the current model until the end of the fiscal year ending in March 2025. This doesn’t officially claim the ‘end’ of an era for Nintendo, but it does hint at a potential timeline for the Nintendo Switch 2 to be officially revealed in the coming years.
Another source at VGC suggested that Dr. Serkan Toto, a Tokyo-based industry consultant, has statements regarding the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2024. Dr. Serka stated:
I would generally say that looking at Nintendo’s financials, it seems clear that it’s time for a new piece of hardware in 2024. Hardware is already projected to fall 16.5% year-on-year in the current fiscal, while the minus for software is expected to hit 15.9%.
However, the new Nintendo Switch 2 model could possibly have LCD screens. While this may raise a few eyebrows regarding the lack of OLED screens at launch, it’s not a reason to worry as the existing Switch has variants too. Similarly, the Nintendo Switch 2 can have a series of launches after its base models come out with larger and better screens.
Features like backwards compatibility and account merging will remain essential to both the Switch and the Switch 2, but there’s no official news around how Nintendo plans to make that happen.
Even with all the leaks and rumours, the biggest competition Nintendo has is… well, itself. Nintendo’s reputation and brand for making the finest and most trusted series of handheld devices have come a long way. The Nintendo Switch 2’s hardware competitor can be a device from Sony or Microsoft, but there’s no concrete evidence surrounding the same.
That puts Nintendo in a position where it can take its time with the new console’s reveal and, in the meantime, focus on bringing fresh and legendary titles for the Switch’s present models.
