Deepfakes have been around forever but a few weeks ago, the concern regarding this unethical practice saw a major increase after some AI-generated nude images of the singing sensation, Taylor Swift were uploaded to X(formerly Twitter) which has got the whole world enraged. The images themselves were removed very soon by X but even the White House got involved in the matter and now even a new bill is being proposed by lawmakers to prevent an incident from taking place in the future.
However, when Xochitl Gomez’s non-consensual nude deepfakes were released by someone on X, no one even batted an eye.
Xochitl Gomez was unable to get her edited images taken down
Xochitl Gomez is an American actress who rose to fame a few years ago for portraying the role of America Chavez in MCU’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen. The child actor has made a lot of headlines since then as she even became the winner of season 32 of Dancing with the Stars.
However, the predators on the internet decided to do something really horrifying instead. Some people created a few explicit AI-generated images of Gomez and uploaded them on X. When Xochitl Gomez saw these images revolving on the social media platform, she was informed that her team had already tried to take these images down but they were unsuccessful. Gomez appeared recently on The Squeeze podcast and talked about the horrific situation. She said,
“It made me weirded out and I didn’t like it and I wanted it taken down. That was my main thought process was, ‘Down. Take this down. Please.’ It wasn’t because I felt like it was invading my privacy, more just like it wasn’t a good look for me. This has nothing to do with me. And yet it’s on here with my face.”
A few fans of Xochitl Gomez even took to X, to raise their concerns.
Amid Taylor Swift’s ongoing AI-generated images controversy, fans raise their voice for Xochitl Gomez
As Taylor Swift‘s AI-generated nude images have continued to garner the attention of people from all over the world, even the White House and Legislation in the country are now involved. Lawmakers have even proposed a bill that would let people sue others if explicit non-consensual AI images of other people were made.
A few fans of Xochitl Gomez took this opportunity to point out the fact that when the same happened with the actress, no one even bothered to remove the posts from X whereas Taylor Swift’s account was even made unsearchable for a few hours to protect the singer.

One fan even pointed out the fact that Gomez is a minor which makes it way more f*cked up.
And not to mention she is a minor.

A lot of fans have continued to point out that deepfakes have been an issue for years now but still nothing was done until Taylor Swift became a victim of this.
This is ridiculous, honestly. Why did nobody care till someones idol started talking about it. Everyone knew gross deepfakes have been out for a long time, yet didn't do anything about it

Feels funny that it only became a pressing issue when a celebrity got upset. I'm sure the AI revenge porn has been going on for a long while before this.

It can be argued that this bill should’ve been proposed years ago now but people need to understand that with the advancement of AI technology, this problem is only going to get worse from now on.
After all, late is still better than never.
