Mike Flanagan is a director who has proved himself as the master of horrors countless times. With iconic and notable series like The Haunting of Hill House and movies like Doctor Sleep, there is no doubt that any person who knows how to handle horror (other than James Wan) is Mike Flanagan.
Talking about horror franchises and upcoming projects, the director revealed that there is one iconic franchise that he’d like to revive. Talking about the classic 1984 franchise, Mike Flanagan revealed that he wants to reboot A Nightmare on Elm Street but no one knows who has the rights for the film!
Mike Flanagan Wants To Reboot A Nightmare on Elm Street
With Johnny Depp and several other notable actors starring in the 1984 film, A Nightmare on Elm Street became a cult-classic film that spawned a franchise. Adding several movies that were deemed average compared to the original.
Mike Flanagan, having proved himself countless times, is heavily interested in rebooting the franchise from scratch. In an episode of the Script Apart podcast, the director mentioned the one franchise that he’d like to revive but there’s just one complication. No one knows who has the rights to the 1984 film.
“One of the [franchises] on my list forever has been ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’. Boy, that would be fun. I have a whole take for it that I worked out a couple of years ago and my understanding is the rights situation for that title is so fraught, no one knows who controls it really, and no one knows who to pitch.”
With the recent release of Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher, it seems that the director may also get to work on Stephen King’s magnum opus, The Dark Tower.

Mike Flanagan Wants To Work On The Dark Tower
Back in 2017, Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey starred in the film The Dark Tower. Based on Stephen King’s one of the most ambitious novels yet, the film failed spectacularly. Mike Flanagan later revealed in an interview with Deadline that he would also like to take a hand at the novels.
“I wrote a pilot, we view it as a as a series that’s going at least five seasons. And having lived with this project as long as I have, I have an enormous amount of it worked out in my brain. But I have a pilot script I’m thrilled with and a very detailed outline for the first season and a broader outline for the subsequent seasons.”
Flanagan’s ideas reached Stephen King as he also gave approval via X (formerly Twitter). It seems that Mike Flanagan will pretty soon find himself busy bringing The Dark Tower novels to a live-action series. Flanagan’s latest drama miniseries The Fall of the House of Usher is currently available to stream on Netflix.
