Captain America is like no other in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His story can certainly be called one of the most memorable ones, having one of the most perfect story arcs for his character and him being a truly simple, yet complex person. The three films in this franchise, all encompass a perfectly told story of Steve Rogers, a man who starts off wanting to do as much good as he can and finishes the franchise on the run from the government still choosing to do exactly what he believes in, despite of what the rest of the world tells him.
The first film in the franchise, Captain America: The First Avenger, is the perfect example of the genius of these films. Interestingly enough, however, recent news revealed that during the shooting of the film, the director, Joe Johnston, would hide from everyone on set for an extremely interesting reason.
Captain America Director Hid From Everyone On Set
Though Joe Johnston is an extremely respected director, having worked on projects like Jumanji and The Rocketeer, he started off in the industry as a visual effects designer and was extremely successful at it, so much so that he worked on the Star Wars franchise’s original trilogy, helping design the look of the world and character, including coming up with Boba Fett’s signature look. Even though he has started working primarily as a director now, it would seem that there are aspects of his past job that he misses a lot.
A film set is no peaceful place, and this is especially true for a Marvel film. Adding this to the fact that directors are constantly under immense pressure and you get an environment that can cause a lot of stress for someone like Johnston. It was revealed that this would get to the director so much that he had a special room designed on the set of Captain America: The First Avenger, behind the backs of the set designers, that he used to escape for a few hours.
People Would Cover Up For Him
This went on throughout production and this was not only because of Joe Johnston. Supervising Art Director, Andy Nicholson, revealed, during an interview with /Films, how he was able to get away with this on the set of Captain America: The First Avenger. Since the director was gone for hours on end, many people would come looking for him. It would seem that the art team on the project would cover for the director whenever they got the opportunity.
“When Joe wanted to hide from everybody else and just draw, he could go in there for a day and no one would find him. The producers would come walking through and go, ‘Where’s Joe?’ And we’re all trained to say, ‘Well, I haven’t seen him.’ He’d be sitting in an office drawing because that’s how he liked to operate, and he’d come out with 20 pages of beautiful hand-drawn art.”
He revealed that when they were asked if they had seen Johnston, they would simply reply that they hadn’t. Hours later, the director would emerge from his hidden spot, coming out would beautiful new pieces that he had made in the time he spent there.
