Following his global influence in Barbie by extending Kenergy, Ryan Gosling is now set to make his return to the silver screen with the upcoming action film The Fall Guy. Directed by David Leitch and boasting a star-studded cast including Gosling, Emily Blunt and Aaron Taylor Johnson, The Fall Guy is the film adaptation of Glen A. Larson’s 1980s TV series of the same name.
The movie is scheduled to hit the theatres this May and recently had its world premiere at SXSW. And talking about the film at the premiere, director David Leitch emphasized that the upcoming film celebrates the often-overlooked heroes of action cinema.
Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy is a Tribute to Action Cinema’s Unsung Heroes
David Leitch, who started his career in the film industry as a stunt double for Brad Pitt, has since directed multiple successful films, including Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2. And he is now sharing an insight into the life of a stunt performer through his new film, The Fall Guy.
Starring the Oscar-nominated actors Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, the film features a stuntman taking center stage. Leitch, who has described it as a “love letter to stunts,” explained his desire to honor and highlight the stunt performers with the film.
“We wanna celebrate stunts—This profession that we’re celebrating in the movie,” he said at the film’s premiere at SXSW. He further shared that he wants to share a glimpse into the world of stunt work, as he emphasizes how despite their crucial role, the stunt performers are often overlooked. Leitch said,
“We wanted to give the audience a little bit of a taste of it here and to see that we were gonna be doing practical stunts in the film. And again the unsung heroes of action movies are these performers.”
The Fall Guy centers around Cole Seavers, an out-of-work-stunt double who is called back into action when his ex beckons him to join her directorial debut. However, complications arise when the leading action star disappears, prompting Seavers to step up, both to rescue the star and his ex’s film.
Ryan Gosling Acknowledges Stunt Crew’s Dedication in Film Production
After celebrating the stunt community at the 2024 Oscars, Ryan Gosling once again acknowledged the crucial role of stunt professionals in film production. Expressing his hopes for the upcoming film to reflect on their dedication, the actor said, “We hope that it is reflective of how much the crew gives to every single film,” as per The Hollywood Reporter.
He further stated, “It’s an opportunity to finally acknowledge the stunt performers and the incredible contribution that they already make to movies.” The stuntman-turned-director also highlighted that they adapted for practical stunt work to honor the stunt performers.
“We knew we had to be authentic in that world,” the filmmaker said. Premiering recently at SXSW, the upcoming action comedy film has reportedly received a very warm welcome from audiences.
The Fall Guy is set to release on March 12, 2024.
