The Creators Discuss The Leading Role of Flash In Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One was released in January 2024 and is the latest entry in DC’s Tomorrowverse. The movie was directed by Jeff Wamester based on the script written by Jim Krieg. The two masterminds recently sat down for an interview with Comingsoon.net.

The two talked on a number of topics including the role of Flash in the new movie. The whole of the story essentially revolves around Barry Allen. Here, he sheds his usual role as the wisecracking sidekick and rockets to the forefront of the narrative. His connection to the crisis runs deeper than any other hero.

Fans see the ripple effects of the multiverse’s collapse hit him hard, forcing him to make a decision that sets the stage for the film’s entire plot. The film hinges on his ability to tap into the Speed Force in ways never before explored. While fans loved Barry Allen in the front, a question might arise why him?

“I haven’t gotten to do very many Flash stories, so it was really fun to channel him through this movie. But I agree with you. The grounding force on this was him and Iris, and having a relationship grow like it was is like … when directors get to do this stuff, it’s really fun to be able to have the audience have the lens or the window into what’s going on through them.” – Jeff Wamester talking about the role of Flash

The decision to focus on Flash likely stemmed from three factors. First, director Wamester hadn’t tackled a Flash movie before, so the character offered fresh creative ground. Second, large ensemble films can be overwhelming for audiences.

Placing Flash at the center gave viewers a clear emotional anchor in this complex story. And lastly, the use of time travel in DC means Flash is somehow going to get involved.

“And it was totally necessary. The story is so huge and it has so many characters that you have to basically pick one or two to be the audience so that the audience is experiencing this vast, huge thing with them, because otherwise, it’s just too much and you can’t take it in.” – Jim Krieg

While fans certainly love the Son of the Sun and the Knight of the Night, having Barry Allen take the front seat is something everyone liked.
