Epic Games’ Fortnite has grown in both scope and appeal over the years. Much of this has to do with the regular updates the game gets, in the form of content, and live events. Additionally, the game has done several celebrity collaborations, which have always managed to keep things fresh and exciting for the fans.
Out of all of these, one thing that many Fortnite players look out for is the live events. These live events are based on the game’s storyline and offer rewards to the players. These live events are huge, as they engage the game’s global fans together for a shared experience.
Why did Epic Games move away from Fortnite live events?
While they are hugely popular among the fans, live events in Fortnite may have seen a decrease recently. Many fans also felt by the end of Chapter 3 Season 4, that the quality of the game’s live events started to diminish.
All of this is true, the former lead creator of the game revealed the reason behind it. In an exclusive interview with Game File, Donald Mustard spoke about his epic journey with Fortnite. Here he also spoke about why Epic Games started moving away from live events.
Mustard revealed that Epic Games stopped focusing on live events and started working on Fortnite LEGO, Rocket Racing, and more.
He adds,
“Basically, the event team was starting to be needed to work on other stuff. And it was devastating to me because I’m like, ‘This [Live Events] is actually the magic.’ And not everyone at Epic agrees with that.”
He further explained that Epic Games wanted to create a metaverse for the game, which took away the resources from the live event team.
After working at Epic for 15 years, Mustard left the company in September 2023 to work on other projects. With his contributions, Epic’s Fortnite has become one of the most popular games worldwide, attracting a large number of crossover characters and well-known players.
