Captain America ended his run as the leader of the Avengers in Endgame, deciding instead to settle down and take a chance at the life Tony had made for himself. However, a new storyline introduced in Marvel Comics sets up the perfect blueprint to get the character back in the game, something that fans have been anticipating and clamouring for.
Avengers: Twilight is a very unique twist on the Avengers formula, setting the story in a far future police state, where the cops where Iron Man uniforms and citizens are monitored with floating cameras. What is an old symbol of American freedom to do, except join the good fight against fascism?

Captain America is down, but not out in Avengers: Twilight
Steve Rogers is an old man in Avengers: Twilight, just as we left him in Avengers: Endgame. Having a failed run for the office, Steve lives with his wife, meeting up with old friends like an aged Matt Murdock and a night-immobile Luke Cage. There is a lot to be said about the future, of running like a police state, sponsored by James Stark, the son of Iron Man and the Wasp. In a world where the Red Skull is celebrated and old men are hunted time to help the disenfranchised, what else could you expect from Stever Rogers?
While it might seem like the plot is asking the same question that Civil War did, or is exploring the same issues explored in Square Enix’s Avengers game, the comic is more reminiscent of The Dark Knight Returns, putting a retired Steve Rogers back into action to fight fascists, who are celebrating villains as heroes and treating heroes like villains.
Old Steve could find himself fighting new enemies
While the Red Skull might not be being celebrated as a hero in the MCU just yet, Captain America is still someone the world needs. While Sam and Bucky are doing their best to keep the peace, Steve Rogers is a symbol whose voice can be a force for good. While Rogers has sat out quite several major events, when have we known Steve to be out of a fight unless he is forced to be?
Even after spending a life with his wife Peggy, there is a chance that Captain America might find himself without purpose after her death. Given that Peggy probably passed away, because Steve could not interfere with the timeline, Avengers: Twilight sets the perfect template for the character to join the fray, and fight the good fight again whatever world-ending scenario the Avengers might be facing.
