Jujutsu Kaisen Shibuya arc is renowned for being peak storytelling and action. Almost every character had a role to fulfill and the highlights were the Shibuya massacre by Sukuna and the sealing of Satoru Gojo in the Prison Realm.

Unfortunately, Gege Akutami has introduced several powerful characters in Jujutsu Kaisen but failed to showcase their utmost potential. Aoi Todo, Yuji’s best friend. disappeared following the events in Shibuya after losing one of his arms. Shoko Ieri, Jujutsu High’s primary doctor, had some of the best Reverse Cursed Techniques but didn’t use her energies for fighting purposes.

Kokichi Muta is another character who could have had a larger role to play in Jujutsu Kaisen. Initially restricted due to his abilities, he struck a deal with Mahito for his freedom but only to be killed.

Kokichi Muta’s (Mechamaru) Tragic Case In Jujutsu Kaisen

Due to Heavenly Restriction, Kokichi Muta was born with bindings all over his body but also possessed immense cursed energy. He had no right arm and both his legs were unable to support his body weight. Muta resided in a cave, away from sunlight, as it would make blisters appear on his skin due to his condition.

Kokichi Muta existed as Mechamaru, a mechanical cursed corpse that he used to attend school, and had to socialize with students in a robotic voice. As Mechamaru, he fell in love with a classmate named Kasumi Miwa. His main goal was to obtain a normal body and meet the woman and his friends in person rather than using a cursed object.

Muta struck a Binding Vow with Mahito to get his body healed via Idle Transfiguration. In exchange, he used his Puppet Manipulation Cursed Technique to eavesdrop and relay information about events in Jujutsu High to Mahito. Utahime and Satoru Gojo caught the ‘mole’ in Chapter 79 but it wasn’t Kokichi’s actual body but rather a Mechamaru.

Upon getting his body back, Kokichi Muta instantly charged at Mahito. Fans believed that Muta obtained the win by using his Simple Domain to exorcise Mahito but it turned out that the villain merely faked his death. After much suspense, Muta was killed and remnants of his consciousness remained in Mechamarus that he created gradually faded.

Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration not only got rid of the Heavenly bindings but also developed Kokichi Muta’s right arm. A general rule of sorcery in Jujutsu Kaisen is that more hands meant more ability to wield cursed energy techniques. Taking the example of 20 Finger Sukuna, Muta could have been one of the strongest sorcerers if he hadn’t written off-screen so early.

A glimpse of what Kokichi could achieve was seen in his battle against Mahito. He invoked a stronger, heavily armored version of Mechmaru with the ‘Ultimate Mechamaru, Mode: Absolute’ Technique. Completing the invocation’s large-scale attacks were deadly blasts of cursed energies in the forms of Miracle Cannon and Piegon Viola.

Kokichi Muta’s cursed techniques grew stronger according to the years he stored the energy. Although he lacked development in his physical combat abilities due to being restricted for years, he made up for it with his mental prowess. Even Suguru Geto claimed how Muta almost defeated Mahito, and the latter had to fake his death to create an opening against such a powerful rival.

Although classified as a semi-grade 1 jujutsu sorcerer, a healed and developed Kokichi Muta in Jujutsu Kaisen undoubtedly would’ve been in the ‘special grade’ division. He may have even played a vital role amidst the heroes. Nonetheless, Gege Akutami had other plans.
