Back in 1987, Rosie Perez had a small role in the series 21 Jump Street. Portraying the role of an illiterate drug dealer’s girlfriend, she had some scenes with the iconic actor which essentially gave the way to her freedom.
With Johnny Depp by her side, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor encouraged her that she was too good for series and projects like these. Wanting her to get better roles, Depp gave her the confidence that she needed and the next thing she did was to fire her agent. Talking about it to Variety, the actress revealed that her agent at that time wanted Rosie Perez to get a nose job and dye her hair blond because she wasn’t a person of color!
“I don’t want her to be cancelled, but she told me that if I dyed my hair blond and got a nose job, ‘I can get you more jobs. Because you’re not Black.’ I couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘Oh, my goodness. Like, thank you, fired,’”
Depp further introduced Rosie Perez to his then-girlfriend Winona Ryder and even promised her that he would toss her name in Hollywood discussions so that she might get better roles. But the one line that threw Rosie Perez over the moon was when Johnny Depp whispered in her ear “Oh, darling, you’re too good for this s***”.

During her time on 21 Jump Street, the actress shared the screen with Johnny Depp. Talking to Variety, Perez revealed that Johnny Depp leaned in her ear and whispered to her the praise that she needed during the first take together!
“My first scene, Johnny Depp whispered in my ear, ‘Oh, darling, you’re too good for this s***’. Then he invited me to his trailer, and I’m thinking, ‘Oh, my God, Johnny Depp’s invited me to his trailer.’ He’s on the phone, and he goes, ‘Yeah, yeah, she’s amazing. Her name is Rosie Perez. Hang on. Hey, Rosie – over here. Say hello to my girlfriend, Winona Ryder.’”
