Marvel‘s Loki, the God of Mischief, and One Piece‘s Monkey D. Luffy, both are both beloved characters with unique abilities and captivating personalities. While they possess incredible strengths, they are not invincible.
Marvel‘s Loki, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston is a complex character. As the Norse God of Mischief, Loki possesses a range of supernatural abilities. On the other hand, Monkey D. Luffy, the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda’s manga and anime masterpiece, One Piece, is a pirate with the remarkable ability to stretch his body like rubber after consuming the Gomu Gomu no Mi, a type of Devil Fruit. But do you wonder what might be the similarity between these two characters? Let’s dig out.
What is the similarity between Marvel‘s Loki and One Piece‘s Monkey D. Luffy?
Marvel‘s Loki played by Tom Hiddleston and One Piece‘s Monkey D. Luffy are two iconic characters from different universes, and on the surface, they appear to be quite different. However, there is one notable similarity between them: both characters are rendered powerless when exposed to water.
Despite being the god of mischief and often portrayed as an antagonist in the Marvel Universe, Loki has this bizarre weakness. Loki’s spells can’t work while he’s wet.
On the other hand, Luffy realizes that his powers don’t seem to work in seawater despite having dreams of becoming the Pirate King and finding the legendary One Piece treasure. In the Netflix series, it is only seawater, but in the manga, this extends to any water body.
Why Can’t Both the Characters Use Their Powers in Water?
The inability of both Loki and Luffy to use their powers in water is a fascinating aspect of their respective stories. In both cases, this weakness is linked to the origins of their supernatural abilities.
When Thor knocks Loki down with the barrel to Hudson Bay, it comes to his mind that “Loki’s magic powers are useless in water!” he quickly takes action and rescues Loki from a potential watery grave and sends him back to Asgard.
He says; “I’m keeping you wet so you can’t use your magic against me!”
In Luffy’s case, his weakness in water is a direct consequence of consuming a Devil Fruit. Whoever eats the fruit, the powers become so weak that he cannot use them. His body can still stretch, but he is not able to use it because the water leaves him unable to move. When a Devil Fruit eater falls into an ocean, the seawater immobilizes them, and they drown until someone else saves them.
This “Sea-Prism Stone” effect is a core part of the series’ lore, and it adds depth to the challenges Luffy faces on his journey to becoming the Pirate King.
