Filmmakers are calling the Toronto Film Festival to drop the Royal Bank of Canada as a sponsor

Besides Mark Ruffalo, several other concerned filmmakers are speaking out on the issue at hand as well. As per reports, over 214 directors have signed an open letter calling on the Toronto Film Festival to terminate business with RBC, its longtime sponsor for over sixteen years, for ‘financing oil projects on Indigenous lands and in BIPOC communities.’

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the letter addressed to TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey states that:

“Multiple leading Indigenous and BIPOC organizations and nations have denounced the bank’s indiscriminate enabling of projects on their lands, which they argue fail to respect their fundamental rights.”

As of now, numerous editors, festival programmers, cinematographers, and movie directors including Vincenzo Natali, Zach Lipovsky, and Andrew Currie have signed the open letter. Further reports on the matter are yet to be received.
