On a virtual screen on a building in China, a promotional video of Bartholomew Kuma’s birthday was shown which featured a birthday message for the character and indirectly promoted the series and the Egghead Island arc, one of its most important arcs in the series. However, the exact location of the building is unknown.
Along with the promotional birthday message, the video featured a flashback of Kuma’s past with some visuals from the One Piece manga’s latest chapters. It showed his journey from a child to the cyborg he became later on, in bits of him running somewhere. The promotional material also demonstrates the influence the Kuma flashback has had on the fans’ reaction to the show, particularly during the period when the Egghead arc was being criticized by many.
However, this demonstration of Kuma’s journey might have worked against them as instead of becoming a form of advertisement for the series, it became a huge spoiler for the fans who have yet to catch up to the events of manga in One Piece.
One Piece Marketing Strategy Dooms Fans With Spoilers
Since the promotional video showed Kuma going through different phases and moments in his life, including the last moments of his flashback, it has revealed many important details to One Piece fans who haven’t yet read those parts of the manga.
Individuals who observe advertisements without any background information are probably not aware of the importance of what they see. But those who have read some initial chapters of the manga got some huge spoilers through that video.
The advertisement also highlights Kuma’s importance as a character, which he already was and has grown even more so after the conclusion of his flashback. Kuma’s journey and his character development throughout the story have made him one of the most important characters, especially for the Egghead arc, and seeing such spoilers would surely be disappointing for the One Piece fans.
