No accolades can adequately capture the phenomenal contributions of Meryl Streep to Hollywood. The 74-year-old actress has captivated fans with a myriad of roles, each distinct from the next. Streep currently holds the record for the most Oscar nominations, boasting an impressive 21 nominations. Interestingly, no one will break this record anytime soon, as the second in line is the late legendary actress Katharine Hepburn and retired actor Jack Nicholson with 12 each.
Active in the industry since 1975, Streep continues to shine in roles, including her latest work in the series Only Murders in the Building. Beyond her Oscar triumphs, Streep has also left a mark on the Golden Globes and Primetime Emmy Awards.
Meryl Streep Holds A Record Number Of Oscar Nominations
Meryl Streep debuted in the 1977 film, Julia, in a brief role alongside Jane Fonda. Her second role in The Deer Hunter was recommended by Robert De Niro, who had spotted her during one of her stage productions. The film earned Streep her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The following year, Streep received her second nomination, this time resulting in a win. The Devil Wears Prada actress won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Kramer vs. Kramer.
According to Statista, Streep holds the record for the most Oscar nominations, earning 21 nods from the Academy. But she was unlucky with her nomination-to-win ratio, with only three wins in total. Her other wins included Best Actress Oscars for her roles in Sophie’s Choice in 1983 and The Iron Lady in 2012. Of The Prom actress’s nominations, 17 were for Best Actress and 4 for Best Supporting Actress.
Streep’s most recent Oscar nomination came in 2018 for her portrayal of American newspaper publisher, Kay Graham, in The Post. The likelihood of any other actor surpassing this feat in the next few years is slim. The next active star on the list, Denzel Washington, has nine nominations and two wins, which is nowhere close to Streep’s feat.
