Hollywood stars Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep have shared the screen in several movies, including the 2014 musical fantasy Into the Woods. The movie follows a baker and his wife, cursed by a witch, who offers to lift the curse if they get her four objects. Talking about her experience working with the legendary actress, Blunt shared how her character is often tormented by Streep, whether it’s in The Devil Wears Prada or Into the Woods.
So, she asked her co-star to play her lowly dressmaker in one of the movies, only to receive a savage rejection from the three-time Oscar-winning actress.
Meryl Streep Rejected Emily Blunt’s Conception
During an appearance on David Letterman’s late-night talk show, Emily Blunt shared how she saved Meryl Streep’s life while filming Into the Woods. She shared that while rehearsing one of the scenes, the 74-year-old actress tripped from the table after her foot got caught in her cape.
She stated that while the film’s director, Rob Marshall, and her co-star, James Corden, watched in horror, Blunt came to her rescue. “The pregnant woman caught her,” she shared, referring to herself, as she was pregnant while filming the movie.
The actress shared that her co-star could have been seriously injured. Stating that she owes her, Blunt suggested changing their on-screen dynamic, where she would be the Queen of Versailles and Streep would be her “lowly dressmaker.”
When asked if she has shared the idea with The Iron Lady star, she said, “I think it’s a great idea, and I mentioned it to her, and her response was ‘Dream on.'” While the actress was able to discuss the thought with Streep while filming the movie together, Blunt recently opened up about being terrified of her co-star when they shared the screen for the first time.
Meryl Streep Terrified Emily Blunt on The Devil Wears Prada Set
Emily Blunt played Meryl Streep’s assistant in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada. The actress later shared that she felt terrified of her co-star while filming the movie. “She’s amazing and was slightly terrifying in that film,” she recalled during her appearance on Variety’s Actors on Actors. The movie features Streep as Miranda Priestly, a fashion magazine editor.
It was also the first time she opted for method acting. Blunt shared the same as she said, “She said it was one of the first times she’s tried Method acting.” But it turned out to be a “miserable” experience for her. During The Devil Wears Prada reunion, Streep also called it a “horrible” experience and has said that it was the last time she ever attempted method acting.
