Even our favorite celebrities are not immune to being haunted by their past in the quick-paced world of viral content. Recently, a video of the beloved British actress Emily Blunt fat-shaming a waitress from more than ten years ago surfaced. During a 2012 appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, the actress, 40, made some insensitive remarks that she is now taking responsibility for.
After a throwback clip from the talk show in which Blunt called an American waitress “enormous”, went viral, the Oppenheimer actress admitted that she was embarrassed by her unkind remarks. Actually, during her earlier visit as a guest on The Jonathan Ross Show, the actress recalled having a quick bite to eat at a US restaurant while filming in Thibodaux, Louisiana.

Emily Blunt ‘Appalled’ by Her Previous Fat-Shaming Remark
Emily Blunt is probably avoiding a potential scandal by telling PEOPLE she is “appalled” about her September 2012 appearance on the UK’s The Jonathan Ross Show, in which she called a waitress “enormous”. The actress was promoting her part in Rian Johnson’s movie Looper at the time.
In a viral video of The Jonathan Ross Show, Blunt can be heard discussing a time when she had dinner at a Chili’s restaurant while filming for TriStar Pictures’ 2012 movie. During the interview, Blunt revealed this to the host:
“If you go to Chili’s you can see why so many of our American friends are enormous. Well the girl who was serving me was enormous. I think she got freebie meals at Chili’s.”
Blunt has apologized for using derogatory language in a resurfaced interview from 2012. In a statement given exclusively to PEOPLE on Friday, she said:
“I just need to address this head-on as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12 years ago. I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show.”
The Henry VIII actress said that she has always thought of herself as someone who would not dream of upsetting anyone and added
“So whatever possessed me to say anything like this in that moment is unrecognizable to me or anything I stand for. And yet it happened, and I said it and I’m so sorry for any hurt caused. I was absolutely old enough to know better.”
