During a press conference for 2023’s Oppenheimer, actress Florence Pugh revealed that the camera broke while she was filming her s*x scene with actor Cillian Murphy. She explained that she tried to make the best out of the situation by learning how to fix the camera,

“In the middle of our s*x scene, the camera broke – when we both were naked and it was not ideal timing. There weren’t many cameras – one camera was in the shop being fixed … and then we had to figure out how to fix this camera. So Cillian and I are in this room together – it’s a closed set – and we’re both holding our bodies. This camera surgeon comes into the room and starts [fixing the camera] and I am like, ‘Well, this is my moment to learn, so tell me, what’s wrong with this camera?’ You just make your moments and I am like, ‘What’s going on with the shutter here buddy?'”

The entire film was filmed in a combination of IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm large-format film, including, for the first time, scenes in IMAX black-and-white film photography.

Further in the interview, Pugh explained that she felt lucky to be working in the movie as every person on the set was dedicated to creating the movie,

“Anyway, he [camera technician] explains and Chris comes in and tells me, ‘It’s because the light isn’t coming in right.’ It is crazy that every person on the set was so knowledgeable and was so ready to make this kind of movie that there was no dull moment. It was all amazing, it felt like we were lucky to be there every second of the day.”

Oppenheimer was theatrically released in the United States on July 21 by Universal and grossed over $955 million worldwide, becoming the third-highest-grossing film of 2023. It is now the highest-grossing World War II-related film, as well as the highest-grossing biographical film. The film has been recognized for its greatness as it earned 13 nominations each at the 77th British Academy Film Awards and the 96th Academy Awards, including one for Best Film and Best Picture, respectively.
