Palworld is currently all the hype on the market, from being successful in terms of sales, to breaking new ground in Twitch viewership, it feels like the game cannot stop winning. The title, which is surrounded by controversy and has been dubbed “Pokémon with Guns,” has some dark aspects. These include some of the game’s offerings that allow players to hunt tiny companions called Pals, and engage them in manual labor.

It is worth noting that the Pals resemble Pokémon, and one cannot discount the resemblance. The game also has mod support, which means that the community can add new content as it wishes. While mod support isn’t available currently, it is confirmed to be coming soon, and this could potentially open doors to a lot of possibilities.

Mod Support For Palworld Might Pave the Way For An Open-World Pokémon Game

Yep, that's not Pikachu, it's a Pal from Palworld.

Pocketpair, the developer responsible for Palworld, recently confirmed that supporting mods are in the cards for the title. And we certainly live in a generation of gaming where a title can be improved leaps and bounds by using mods.

The developer chamfered most of the rough edges of the game, but some modders can take matters into their own hands. Regarding Palworld, remember that the game is undoubtedly next-gen. The developers, however, had this to say on the game’s official Steam product page’s FAQ section about mods:

Steam Workshop support won’t be supported straight away but we plan to add it after launch. Palworld is made in Unreal Engine 5 and we look forward to seeing what sort of mods people come up with!

Now, Pokémon games have exclusively been for Nintendo consoles and have been published by Nintendo as well. Since they have launched exclusively on those platforms, they have been limited in terms of hardware. However, since a title like Palworld has established a core game, something that is more or less an outer shell for modders can be enriched with community-made content. And in this great area, there might be a time when the community makes Pokémon available in-game.

For example, the game already has a Paldeck, which can be seen as similar to the Pokédex in the Pokémon animated series and other media based on the IP. There are also Pals, which seem like Pokémon from a parallel earth.

Modders could add a Pokéball system, trainers, gyms, and everything from the Pokémon universe, considering the mod support allows them to think and implement big. While the three owners of the Pokémon IP: Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures, will certainly not be happy about this, it is still very much possible.

And since the title is unhinged compared to the media released by Nintendo, we might be in for some mods deemed unpleasant by Pokémon purists. Although the creation of a Pokémon mod is legally questionable at best, and is not advised at all, the chances of a modder taking on the challenge seem high.

And it has been possible solely because the game’s developers have empowered the community by enabling mod support. As and when mod support for the game is released, which will happen when the title is launched officially, we could be in for various surprises.
