Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller in The Last of Us made everyone cry. Even though a lot of fans of the video game were initially concerned about the casting, all doubts regarding his performance abated the moment he stepped on-screen as Joel.
Many thought the actor must have played the game before to get Joel’s mannerisms down so right that it felt like the character had stepped out from the screen. But it turns out, Pascal hasn’t played the games at all. That’s why, when one fellow zombie show actor told him about the ending he was surprised.
Pedro Pascal Had No Idea That The Last Of Us Was A Game
Pedro Pascal and Steven Yeun interviewed each other as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series. The one thing common between them is that they have both starred in zombie shows. Yeun was in The Walking Dead while Pascal was in The Last of Us. In fact, the game was released at the height of The Walking Dead’s popularity as well.
So of course, Yeun had to ask his fellow zombie show actor if he ever played the famous game. Pascal wasn’t too enthused about answering this question because he didn’t even know about the existence of the game before getting the job. Here’s how the conversation went:
STEVEN YEUN: “How much did you know about ‘The Last of Us’?”
PEDRO PASCAL: “Ugh, next question.”
YEUN: “OK, cool.”
PASCAL: “I didn’t know anything about the game. The first things that came to me were the scripts written by Craig Mazin. I was like, ‘This story is amazing.’ And my nephews were like, ‘It’s a video game, you idiot!'”
The Walking Dead star then revealed that he played The Last of Us game when it first came out. In fact, he played continuously for 12 hours straight before telling all about it to his castmates. The Game of Thrones star couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Here’s what Yeun said:
YEUN: “I feel weirdly connected to you in a multitude of ways. One is when I was shooting ‘The Walking Dead’ — a show that is kind of spiritually connected to your show — the Last of Us game came out, and I played it 12 hours straight.”
PASCAL: “Are you serious?”
YEUN: “I remember finishing it and then coming to set the next day being catatonic. Like, ‘Guys, I just experienced something.’ And then to see you play that part. You fall into your characters in a way that I think is so gracious.”
Since Yeun has played the game so he obviously knows about the ending and he informed non-gamer Pascal about it as well.
Pedro Pascal Was Shocked Upon Hearing The Ending Of The Last Of Us Game
During the conversation, Steven Yeun informed Pedro Pascal what happened in the end and The Last of Us star remarked that even Neil Druckmann didn’t inform him about it. Here’s how the conversation went:
YEUN: “I don’t remember what season it was, but when the game came out, I remember I played it 12 hours straight, down to that last…where you just push the characters forward as they’re having that last beautiful scene you have.”
PASCAL: “Are you serious?”
YEUN: “Nothing happens. You just walk through the forest.”
PASCAL: “You’ve told me more about the game than the creator of the video game.”
With The Last of Us renewed for season 2, fans are worried that Pascal’s Joel Miller will suffer the same fate as his game’s counterpart. However, it’s possible that the showrunners might change Joel’s death to keep Pascal in the show. It will interesting to see how the makers of the show as well as the game handle it. But does the actor know that Joel Miller dies in part 2 of the game? Yes, he does.
