Every actor has their own way of getting ready for a role, and at times, a few of them just get a little deeper into their character. Thus implementing what’s known as method acting, a few actors get into uncomfortable territory. But certainly, the DC newcomer Robert Pattinson isn’t interested in that method.
Speaking with Jennifer Lopez during an interview for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Robert Pattinson voiced his opinion on method acting. Speaking out loud about his perspective, Pattinson shut down method actors with one line. Pointing at why method acting proves problematic, The Batman actor discussed his way of doing things.
Robert Pattinson’s Way of Preparing For a Role
Sitting for an interview with Variety for the Actors on Actors series, Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lopez had serious discussions on acting and career. Speaking about his work on the nightmarish drama The Lighthouse, Pattinson recalled his way of preparing for the role.
Discussing how he ventured into the journey and took up the psychological challenge of playing a character who slowly descends into madness, Robert Pattinson discussed the exhaustion he faced. Stating how he was desperate to get done with the role and get back his peace of mind, the actor discussed his journey.
“It was a kind of no limit part, which I always really like. We’d do these completely wild scenes, and then literally after a take, you’d be exhausted. It’s kind of cathartic. I don’t know how you’d be able to bring the part home. It would be impossible.”
Slowly shifting his conversation towards actors who implement method acting in their career, Robert Pattinson voiced his opinion on the same. Clarifying how he can’t carry on the character in real life until the project is wrapped up, Pattinson seemingly shuts down method actors.
Robert Pattinson Shut Down Method Actors
Stating how he isn’t a fan of method acting, Robert Pattinson discussed his opinion and rightfully slammed method actors during his interview for Variety with Jennifer Lopez. Although he respects the practice of method acting, the technique isn’t something that he is eager to implement.
Slamming the technique of achieving complete emotional identification with a role, Robert Pattinson shut down method actors with one argument. Claiming how actors often use this technique for psychological roles, Pattinson questioned why no one implements this to embody a kind and compassionate character.
“I always say about people who do method acting, you only ever see people do the method when they’re playing an a–holes. You never see someone being lovely to everyone while they’re really deep in character.”
Agreeing with Robert Pattinson’s argument, Jennifer Lopez discussed how even she feels the urge to get out of the role, as soon as possible. “I’ve done movies for many years now, I can’t wait for the end of the day to kind of let it go and go home and get in the shower and literally wash it all off.” Lopez shared. Thus, both the actors agreed on how difficult it is for them to remain in character throughout an entire production.
