Even the Marvel actor, Donald Glover had allegedly faced a troubling environment on the sets of the NBC sitcom, due to the former. 

Chevy Chase Insulted Donald Glover on Community Set

Chevy Chase has reportedly been tagged as a difficult person to work with, which resurfaced when his interaction on the sets of Community. with Marvel actor, Donald Glover was revealed.

Glover portrayed the role of Troy Barnes in the NBC sitcom (Seasons 1-5) with the former as Pierce Hawthorne in the first four seasons. He had a guest role in the fifth season but not everyone seemingly enjoyed his company.

The series showrunner, Dan Harmon reflected on Chase’s alleged ill behavior, stating to The New Yorker that the actor once apologized to the Spider-Man: Homecoming actor after a particularly rough night of Chevy’s non-P.C. verbiage.”

The Mr. & Mrs. Smith star in the same interview revealed that Chase used to make racist comments toward him. According to the profile, the Vacation actor would apparently try to throw Glover off with his racist jokes during his takes.

He once allegedly said, People think you’re funnier because you’re black.” The showrunner claimed that his jealousy was attributed to his ill behavior towards the Atlanta actor. 

Chevy was the first to realize how immensely gifted Donald was, and the way he expressed his jealousy was to try to throw Donald off.

Despite the on-set tension, Donald Glover was unbothered as he just saw Chase as fighting time adding that a true artist accepts “with his reign being over. He added, “can’t help him if he’s thrashing in the water. But I know there’s a human in there somewhere — he’s almost too human.”

As for what the Caddyshack star had to say  he felt saddened that his co-star perceived him in that light. In another interview, he reflected on working on the show, criticizing it for not being funny enough.

Chevy Chase Dissed Community as ‘Not Funny’

During last year’s appearance on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast (via Rolling Stone), Chase claimed that the NBC sitcom was not funny enough for me. 

Reflecting on his time on the NBC sitcom, he shared, 

I honestly felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me, ultimately. I felt a little bit constrained. Everybody had their bits, and I thought they were all good. It just wasn’t hard-hitting enough for me.

He also got candid about what he felt about his character, stating,

I didn’t mind the character. I just felt that it was… I felt happier being alone. I just didn’t want to be surrounded by that table, every day, with those people. It was too much.

Harmon fired him after 83 episodes for reportedly using a racial slur on set. He starred alongside Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, and Ken Jeong.
