Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign teased in August 2023 that a new album was brewing, with the two powerhouse artists collaborating for the first time. The album was touted to be a follow-up to both of their respective albums, Kanye West’s Donda and Ty Dolla Sign’s Cheers to the Best Memories. The album was also going to be released through their independent label.

The album, titled Vultures, faced several delays and controversies, mostly due to rapper Kanye West’s erratic and controversial behavior. West was reprimanded by many artists and labels for his alleged antisemitic remarks online. Artists such as Ozzy Osbourne rejected Ye’s proposal to sample the hit Black Sabbath song War Pigs for the album. According to The Guardian, Osbourne mentioned that he was hurt that the song was sampled regardless.

Rapper Nikki Minaj also refused to allow their collaboration New Body to be included in the album. According to The Independent, Minaj objected to using a five-year-old song in the album as it had already been out for a long time. Vultures was scheduled for a December release but was then pushed to January. However, the album did not make the January release date as well, with the album finally touted to release on February 10.

To promote the release, Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign held multiple listening events. But the album was reportedly still not out on February 9 on major streaming platforms. Later, users took to X to announce that the album had been released on select platforms such as TIDAL, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.

Many users also speculated that there might have been some issues between Spotify and Kanye West. The last time the two made headlines was back in 2022 when Spotify criticized Ye’s comments much like many other brands at the time, but did not remove his music from the platform. Spotify chief Daniel Ek stated to Reuters that,

“Recent antisemitic remarks made by the rapper are “just awful comments,” and would have warranted removal from Spotify for violating its policies, which prohibit hate speech if they had been on a podcast or recording…It’s really just his music, and his music doesn’t violate our policy. It’s up to his label if they want to take action or not.”

The label Def Jam, which owned many of Kanye West’s catalog also condemned the rapper’s remarks but did not request to remove his music from any platform. This was unlike other brands such s Adidas which quickly suspended their deals with him.
