Team Ninja doesn’t shy away from combat-heavy but also narrative-rich games that tackle a specific culture like Japan, they have done the Nioh games which gave them enough confidence and experience to pull their newest and ambitious project off its feet. By taking notes from other games and mixing their creative flair, the team might have succeeded where FromSoftware CEO and director Hidetaka Miyazaki has failed.

FromSoftware nurtured their gamers by unfurling massive damage to their skill and ego, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and every other game of theirs encourage players to not go in swinging but to carefully assess the situation before engaging. There was no difficulty setting at all despite Miyazaki wanting to do it, but Team Ninja didn’t forget and offered dusk which is easy, dawn for normal, and twilight for hard. Three difficulty options to give players a more comfortable playthrough.

Rise of the Ronin will allow players to take on the story at any difficulty that suits their skills, which is a major win compared to all the torture that Miyazaki’s games have given his fans. While his reasoning is justifiable and a good tool for motivating players, Team Ninja has a different approach for their players by giving them more freedom without the pain and torture of constant losing and invincible foes.

Elden Ring Developers Should Take Notes From PlayStation’s Rise Of The Ronin

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree will release on June 21, 2024.

Soulslike games are made for people who are just built differently, the people who are actively seeking hard enemies to beat because they are after something much more rewarding, which is the feeling of hardship than triumph. Miyazaki reminisces every now and then to reflect on what made his previous games work and then reintegrates it with the newest which is what he did for Shadow of the Erdtree with the help of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Rise of the Ronin is another attempt at rebalancing the Soulslike genre that makes it more accessible for players who are not that skilled but still want to experience the story for what it is. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but there is certainly an audience that is ready and willing to play the game on the hardest difficulty just because they can.

Perhaps if Miyazaki included a difficulty setting for FromSoftware’s Elden Ring successor, more players would appreciate even more so. Are you excited for Rise of the Ronin? Let us know in the comments section below!
