Rise of the Ronin is a brand-new IP developed by Team Ninja and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment that takes place in Japan but during a different period in time from fellow PlayStation franchise, Ghost of Tsushima. Despite being set in the same country, these two games have a lot of differences, the gameplay in Team Ninja’s latest makes Ghost of Tsushima look like an easier Soulslike game designed for players that aren’t too keen on difficult gameplay.
There was a time when fans thought that this game was a sequel or a spin-off of the 2020 hit samurai game but it is not even close, they may share the same publisher but that’s about it. The developers opted that the game should take place during the Bakumatsu period, and based on the footage that was showcasing the variety of weapons, it does seem like Rise of the Ronin will have more refined combat system than Ghost of Tsushima.
Rise Of The Ronin Is A Beefier Ghost Of Tsushima
The developers are no strangers to creating games that highlight Japanese culture like the way of the samurai and ninjas. Team Ninja also developed the Nioh series as well as the hack-and-slash Ninja Gaiden games that a rival company, Microsoft, published for the Xbox 360. Their history and experience are sufficient for building a brand-new IP.

Footage of the upcoming game features the use of the katana. This common samurai weapon heavily resembles the animations of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Ghost of Tsushima, but also the use of firearms like rifles for long-distance combat or to strike enemies from a distance.
Inspired by the success of Elden Ring, Rise of the Ronin will also be another open-world soulslike that will allow players to play at their own pace. The gameplay footage also showcases a few combos that can result in some satisfying moments if done perfectly.
Will Rise Of The Ronin Be The Ultimate Samurai/Soulslike?
Sony may have a problem on their hands, similar titles like Days Gone and The Last of Us have caused a short division of focus from the community because of their similar premise with the undead, but each title stood out and was quite different than originally thought. Rise of the Ronin and Ghost of Tsushima need to be different to succeed.
There is a high demand for both of these franchises, Ghost of Tsushima will be adapted into a live-action film and will most likely get a sequel, as well as the long-awaited and inevitable PC port. Rise of the Ronin is not a clone, and the game space has been saturated with samurai games for quite a while, therefore, Team Ninja needs to get creative to stand out.
