There has always been a lot of public interest in Hollywood relationships. Celebrity love affairs frequently make the news, from Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Once, Jennifer Lawrence, an Oscar-winning actress, ruled tabloids for her open admissions regarding her relationship with filmmaker Darren Aronofsky.
The two worked together in the 2017 psychological horror film, Mother! The actress, 33, claimed that because of her relationship with the director, she felt as though she was working two jobs.
Well, Lawrence has established herself as a household name in Hollywood thanks to her outstanding on-screen work and refreshing candor. She has always been admired for her inherent talent and natural ability to make characters come to life. Her acting approach has been incredibly successful, winning her an Academy Award in addition to many other honors.
Jennifer Lawrence Got Candid About Her Relationship with Darren Aronofsky
In the 2017 thriller directed by Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky, Jennifer Lawrence played the titular nameless protagonist alongside Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Ed Harris. Yes, we are referring to Mother!
Lawrence and Aronofsky first connected while Mother! was being filmed in September 2016, and they soon started dating. However, they eventually parted ways in November 2017. It did not stop the actress, though, from discussing their relationship in detail. The actress once sat down with Adam Sandler for an interview as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series to discuss working with her former boyfriend.
She claimed to have actually faced a particular struggle with Mother!; however, Aronofsky, according to her, was only interested in discussing the film:
“I heard that Darren [Aronofsky] was making a movie, and I’ve always wanted to work with him. He didn’t have a script yet. He just had these ideas and these metaphors. I thought it was amazing, and I trusted him. If he’s got some bombastic idea, like writing God as a narcissistic artist, it’s going to be pretty cool. So I was in before I read anything. The first time I read the script, I threw it across the floor. I didn’t even want it in my house. I thought it was so f*cked up on such a deep level. But I knew that’s what he was doing. That’s the only way to say what he needed to say.”
Although the actress insisted she never dwelled on criticism, her experience with Mother! was special because she was dating the film’s director (Darren Aronofsky) at the time. She recounted on Actors on Actors:
“We’d be on the tour together, I’d come back to the hotel and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is the movie, and he comes back and that’s all he wants to talk about,. I was doing double duty of trying to be a supportive partner while also being like, ‘Can I please, for the love of God, not think about Mother! for one second?’”
Did Jennifer Lawrence Fully Understand Mother!?
Even Jennifer Lawrence struggled to understand her own film, Mother! The 2017 psychological horror film featured the Oscar-winning actress in the lead role. The actress earlier appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, in which the host, Cohen, 55, posed the following questions to the celebrity:
“On a scale of 1 to totally confused, how much did you understand your film Mother!?”
The No Hard Feelings actress responded:
“I’m going to be honest. Well, I was sleeping with the director, so I had CliffsNotes. So … 5? Or a 4. But if anybody needs any tips on understanding their films, you know what to do!”
Cohen jokingly asked:
“F— the director?”
Lawrence responded:
“Yeah!”.
In 2017, the actress also made an attempt to explain the movie’s plot to Deadline:
“The most important thing to know about this film before seeing it is that it’s all allegory. It’s all metaphor that’s tied to this narrative. It’s the creation and decimation of the universe, including Biblical themes and creation of religion.”
The challenging demands of the role turned out to be completely different from anything Lawrence had ever done as the actress claimed:
“I never lose myself in a movie. This is the only time I’ve lost myself. I couldn’t tell my body that none of it was real. I kept on hyperventilating.”
Against a $30 million budget, the movie’s global box office took in $44.5 million. It was generally well-received, but there was controversy over its use of biblical allegories and violent imagery. The actress was last seen in Gene Stupnitsky’s film, No Hard Feelings.
Mother! is streaming on Paramount Plus.
