Although there is not a firm release date yet, details regarding the plot and cast of Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film, The Movie Critic, have already started to surface. Famously, the director, 60, intends to step away from filmmaking after ten films. With The Movie Critic being his final film, he will now have nine films under his belt.
Should Tarantino stick to his word that his next project will be his last, The Movie Critic news becomes even more appealing. And who better to appear in the renowned director’s farewell film than the incomparable Tom Cruise? According to The InSneider, the Pulp Fiction director is reportedly trying to squeeze the actor into his last film alongside Brad Pitt.
If this is true, it will be fascinating to see how these two legendary Hollywood figures overcome their past feuds to seize this once-in-a-lifetime chance.
Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise to Reunite on Quentin Tarantino’s The Movie Critic?
Thanks to Jeff Sneider and his newsletter, The InSneider, we got some news regarding Quentin Tarantino’s The Movie Critic. Tom Cruise is reportedly in talks to star in the director’s final flick. This will eventually depend on the former’s busy schedule, but he is reportedly changing his plans to accommodate a supporting role in the movie.
With Mission: Impossible 8, Cruise will have a lot on his plate this year, but he will try to fit Tarantino’s film into his schedule before or after Christopher McQuarrie’s film shoots are completed. It is anticipated that the Kill Bill: Volume 1 director will begin work on The Movie Critic in the early months of 2025.
In 2019, Tarantino discussed working with Cruise on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz (The Playlist):
“He’s a great guy and we really hit it off. [A collaboration] could happen on something else.”
It was announced last week that Brad Pitt had become a cast member of The Movie Critic (via Deadline). There has been talk of a wide range of talent showing up in the ‘ensemble’ film, including Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Paul Walter Hauser, and John Travolta, though no additional official casting has been disclosed.
In the past several years, Cruise, 61, and Pitt—two of the few surviving icons of the film industry—have become fixated on producing only action-packed franchise films. But it is also difficult to imagine two actors as talented and charismatic sharing the big screen again, given their feud history.
The Causes of the Rift Between Brad Pitt And Tom Cruise
Seizing the opportunity to work with megastar Tom Cruise in the 1994 horror film Interview with the Vampire, Brad Pitt rode high after his breakthrough performance in 1991’s Thelma & Louise. However, the two were at odds from the start of their conversation. Pitt, who played a sullen vampire in the film, reportedly acknowledged being “miserable” on set (via Entertainment Weekly). And things did not get any better when working with Cruise.
Pitt voiced complaints via YourTango during an interview:
“He bugged me. There came a point during filming when I started really resenting him. He’s North Pole, I’m South. He’s always coming at you with a handshake, whereas I may bump into you. There was this underlying competition that got in the way of any real conversation.”
The Fight Club star also found the dark tone of Interview with the Vampire to be burdensome. Pitt clarified this in a 1994 Rolling Stone interview:
“You gotta understand, my character wants to kill himself for the whole movie. I’ve never thought about killing myself. It was a sick thing. I don’t like when a movie messes with your day.”
Pitt played it a little sly when Rolling Stone inquired about his relationship with Cruise while they were filming Neil Jordan’s movie. The former remarked referring to a different co-star:
“I’m tellin’ ya, Antonio Banderas is the greatest guy.”
Well, with over 60 acting credits under his belt, Pitt can afford to be selective about whom to talk to, which makes sense. Anyway, putting aside their past conflicts, audiences will be riveted by Cruise and Pitt’s undeniable chemistry on screen once again. As Tarantino bids farewell to directing, his final film is sure to be the memorable crescendo that the world of cinema deserves.
