Christopher Nolan and Michael Caine are one of the most renowned collaborators in the industry. The British actor joined the director in the first part of The Dark Knight Trilogy and then continued to feature in every Nolan movie over the years. Caine rose to prominence with his role as Alfred Pennyworth in Batman Begins. Interestingly, Nolan personally came to the Inception actor’s house to pitch the film and the first interaction was also not as expected.

How was the first interaction between Christopher Nolan and Michael Caine?

Michael Caine‘s Alfred Pennyworth is considered one of the best on-screen portrayals of the character. Christopher Nolan made sure to make the character of Batman’s butler equally important as the others. But if the British actor is to be believed, then the director lost his cool for some moment when he visited him to pitch Batman Begins.

When Caine spoke to Aubrey Plaza for Interview magazine, he described the whole incident when Christopher Nolan came to meet him for the first time. According to the two times Oscar-winner, when the Interstellar mastermind came to his door, he understood it was a director but couldn’t identify him until hearing his name. He was acquainted with Nolan’s first three movies which garnered amazing reception critically and commercially.

Following that, when Nolan revealed that he wanted The Italian Job actor for Batman Begins, Michael Caine took no time to figure out that he was going to be Alfred. But at first, he was not very serious about it which looks like the director didn’t appreciate much as Pennyworth is an integral character in the stories centering on Batman. The 90-year-old states:

“So I said to him, ‘Am I the butler?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, you’re the butler.’ So I said, ‘What do I say? Dinner is served? Would you like another glass of wine?’ And he said, ‘Michael, the butler was his foster father. His father died and the butler brought him up, so he’s very important and it’s a very good part. Read the bloody script.'”

What happened after gave us one of the best comic-book trilogies ever with Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne aka Batman along with a range of several other well-known faces. Very soon, Caine became an integral part of Christopher Nolan’s movies and their name rose as one of the most celebrated collaborators with several blockbusters.

Including The Dark Knight Trilogy, Michael Caine has been seen in eight feature roles in Nolan’s movies with an uncredited voice role in Dunkirk. While it is not very shocking for an icon like Caine to be a favorite but there’s also another reason for so many collaborations between them.

According to The Prestige director, Sir Caine is his lucky charm. It is also evident from the box office collection as well as the critical reception received by his movies. But it is not only that as the California Suite actor was also praised by the director for his professionalism and perfection in the art.
