While becoming Batman would be a dream come true for most actors, Christian Bale‘s reason for taking on the role is refreshingly practical. In an interview with GQ, the star revealed his surprisingly relatable motivation:

“It wasn’t about being stopped in the street. For me it was, uh, I could pay off my house. That’s a huge relief, you know?”

The 50-year-old went on to explain how Batman Begins allowed him to fulfill a childhood dream of being debt-free. In another interview with GQ, the Empire of the Sun actor revealed that when he was offered the role of Batman, he was in a tough spot financially.

Having struggled financially for a while, Bale found himself earning very little, even less than some of the makeup artists on set. He was even in danger of losing his house, which he shared with his sister and father.

So, when he was offered the opportunity to play Batman, his main motivation was to earn enough money to prevent his home from being taken away.

Christian Bale also expressed gratitude to Christopher Nolan for giving him the opportunity to play such a beloved character. He pointed out their collaboration on The Prestige between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. More importantly, though, Bale stated how playing Batman opened doors for him professionally.

“The fact that that allowed me to make so many other films,” he said in the same interview, “you know, for instance post-Batman, it got a little bit easier for directors to suggest to me and financiers to say, ‘okay, yeah, we’ll take him.'”

The Welsh-born English actor ultimately retired from the role in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, but hasn’t ruled out a possible return. Since his time as Batman, Bale has been nominated for four Oscars and won one for Best Supporting Actor in The Fighter.
