The timeless icon Cher doesn’t seem to trust her son, Elijah Blue Allman. Cher and Elijah’s relationship has faced ups and downs over the years.
Recently, a rumor has surfaced that the singer allegedly hired four men to kidnap him from a New York City hotel room. She made the abduction because she was trying to “reconcile” her son’s marriage (as reported).
This came after Elijah’s estranged wife, Marieangela King, made the claim in divorce documents she filed. Regarding the abduction allegation, Cher said, “That rumor is not true.” And now, the singer-songwriter has filed for a conservatorship to control her son’s access to money.
Cher Files Conservatorship of Son After The Kidnapping Allegations
Cher claimed in the documents filed this week (per TMZ) that her 47-year-old son is “substantially unable to manage his own financial resources due to severe mental health and substance abuse issues.”
The documents state that Elijah makes $120,000 a year and is entitled to payouts from a trust (set by his late father, Southern Rocker Gregg Allman), but Cher fears the money might be used for drugs instead of essential living expenses.
She argued that being Elijah’s mother, she is the most suitable conservator. The 77-year-old also noted that two of Elijah’s siblings have endorsed her for the role. A court hearing is set on March 6, 2024, which will decide if Cher becomes the conservator of Elijah’s estate.
Cher Confirms Private Family Matter Tied to Son’s Addiction
The After All singer previously confirmed to People that the private family matter is related to her son’s addiction issues. She said about her son’s yearlong struggles with substance abuse that she’s not “suffering from any problem that millions of people in the United States aren’t.” Cher continued:
“I’m a mother. This is my job — one way or another, to try to help my children. You do anything for your children. Whenever you can help them, you just do it because that’s what being a mother is. But it’s joy, even with heartache — mostly, when you think of your children, you just smile and you love them, and you try to be there for them.”
With her statement, it looks like she’s genuinely trying to help her son overcome his struggles with substance abuse. She wants to make sure of Elijah’s well-being.
