Following the release of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part 1: A Child of Fire, audiences and critics have compared it to George Lucas’ Star Wars because of a few similarities. Debate sparked online, and netizens got divided into two groups, one pointing out the similarities, while others defending Snyder.
So here we are with some inside information that reveals whether or not Zack Snyder copied George Lucas. Apparently, it seems the Justice League filmmaker did indeed copy Lucas, but not his Star Wars movies. Rather, Snyder took inspiration from the same source that Lucas used for his franchise.
Rebel Moon Shares Some DNA With George Lucas’ Space Opera
Ever since Zack Snyder’s Netflix sci-fi/fantasy movie hit the screen, critics have been everything but lenient with Rebel Moon – Part 1: A Child of Fire. Nit-picking on the cinematography and storyline, people have been downvoting the film since its inception. But right now what’s plaguing audiences’ minds are the similarities between Rebel Moon and Star Wars.
Pointing out how Rebel Moon reminds them of George Lucas’ space opera, fans have decoded a few aspects of the movie that appear similar to each other. And it’s certainly true that Zack Snyder‘s film does share some DNA with the galaxy far away. But is it because the filmmaker copied Lucas’ movies or there’s something that’s been inspiring both the films?
According to ScreenRant, the similarities between Rebel Moon and Star Wars are actually a result of Zack Snyder and George Lucas having similar inspirations, processes, and approaches to story and mythology. The outlet claims that it’s certainly not a result of Snyder “copying” the space opera.

Star Wars and Zack Snyder Used the Same Source of Inspiration
Addressing ScreenRant’s reports, it suggests that Zack Snyder once pitched the story of Rebel Moon to Lucasfilms to fit their Star Wars universe. Unfortunately, the plan was rejected since Snyder’s R-rated sensibilities and desire didn’t match Lucasfilm’s plans to incorporate his story into the Skywalker saga. However, one thing that worked in favor of Snyder was – taking inspiration.
Apparently, although Rebel Moon didn’t originate as a Star Wars movie, it did share similarities in DNA because Zack Snyder followed George Lucas’ process of making the space opera. Snyder took inspiration from the same source that Lucas used for his franchise. Just like the Star Wars creator, even Snyder was inspired by Joseph Campbell’s works like The Power of Myth and The Hero With a Thousand Faces.
Further, Rebel Moon took the basic concept from Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, which served as a major influence on George Lucas’ Star Wars. Later on, despite being strongly influenced by Westerns, and pulp sci-fi like Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon; Star Wars became a wholly original property. Similarly, Snyder’s sensibilities overlapped in a few areas that inspired Lucas.
Therefore, it’s true that although Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon looks copied from George Lucas’ Star Wars, it actually isn’t. Instead, it was heavily inspired by the same source.
