Remedy Built Alan Wake 2 as a ’30FPS Experience’ BUT There is Hope

The Upcoming Alan Wake 2 has apparently been designed from day 1 with the cinematic philosophy of visuals over framerate. However, the Communications Director for Remedy claims the game will have a ‘solid Performance mode’ despite their goal being a meager 30fps.

Being a Thriller, Alan Wake 2 will want to emphasize its visuals to increase the psychological impact of the atmospheric environment. This is probably why the developers of Remedy wanted to focus on visual quality over high framerates. Whilst the ages-long debate of framerate versus graphics rages on, the argument that ‘consoles can’t do 60fps consistently’ should have been thrown out with the last generation, at least on paper.

Remedy Communications Director Thomas Puha confirms ‘Performance mode’ on Consoles

Remedy says 60fps for Alan Wake 2 May Be On The Cards

Thomas Puha goes on to detail some of the more performance-heavy aspects of the upcoming title. He mentions the game’s setting is a very foliage-rich area which presents challenges with the lighting effects being a heavyweight performance smasher, which anyone who’s turned off shadows for that extra fps knows all too well.

Another piece of information that we do not yet know is whether this performance mode will be limited to specific platforms or will they allow everyone access to the setting. As everyone has their preference and with the game also being available on Xbox Series S, which has less grunt than its more expensive peers, many players will benefit from the choice of a few extra frames, despite Thomas Puha asserting that Alan Wake 2’s graphics scale up and down really well.

This small but enlightening glimpse into the early planning phases of video game development came shortly after an earlier tweet detailing that whilst the development team decided early on to make Alan Wake 2 a ’30FPS Experience’ but luckily later in development found ways to have a performance mode that would presumably remove the 30fps cap. whether or not a smooth 60fps is on the cards remains to be seen.
