Reviewers Can’t Show Their Own Phantom Liberty Footage

Phantom Liberty, the expansion of Cyberpunk 2077, has never been so close to its release date, so the media in the gaming community is starting to heat up with expectations and evaluations from those who have already played the game. At least that’s what was expected.

Many gaming content producers, like IGN, have not yet posted their Phantom Liberty reviews for one simple reason: they cannot show their gameplay clips to the public and instead are instructed to insert a video provided directly by CD Projekt Red. One more red flag for Cyberpunk 2077 that we should keep an eye on as the expansion that promises so much arrives on platforms.

CD Projekt Red forbid Phantom Liberty gameplays from being shown before the launch

Once again, the developer of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red, decided to prohibit excerpts of its games in action from being shown before the “right time”. You shouldn’t see missions from Phantom Liberty, the new Night City adventure, being played before the September 27th release date. The embargo, which restricts materials about a coming project from being published, is a specific strategy that varies in duration and rules depending on the company or the product itself.

This undoubtedly hurts the work of the reviewers who cannot contextualize their statements about the game or show anything that happened to their gameplay, limiting them to statements without visual feedback or to only saying what is in the video sent by the company itself, which is meticulously planned to not display any kind of error, which has already been the source of several problems for Cyberpunk 2077.

In the past, before the release of Cyberpunk 2077, many gamers were excited about the announcement and news about the impressive setting of Night City and what could be done there. We already know the rest of the story: CD Projekt Red lost its stigma of being a great developer by delivering the futuristic title with several development errors, largely due to the lack of time that employees had to finish the project when they were rushed and pressured by greedy executives.

Phantom Liberty seemed like a step forward, but now it has a red flag just like Cyberpunk 2077

Much of the backlash received by Cyberpunk 2077 is due to the lack of transparency with the material displayed, where the flaws were hidden in the promotional materials like dirt swept under the rug. Now that Phantom Liberty has the same red alert with this prohibition on showing gameplay, especially so close to release, has CD Projekt Red not learned from its mistake and will hide development atrocities again?

We can hope that this is paranoia and CD Projekt Red is just keeping good secrets from Phantom Liberty, but as they say, “once burned, twice shy”. Fans are careful with the hype so that disappointment doesn’t hit hard like the last time. Anyway, reviews from some sources treat the expansion as a redemption of the original. It may be that many of them were affectionate towards CD Projekt Red and not purely about the game itself, but we can be excited, just moderately.
