So far, this season of Rick and Morty has shown us a lot more of a vulnerable Rick — and very little in the way of Morty. The third episode doesn’t break that trend, with the protagonist’s grandson/sidekick barely making an appearance. However, the story of this one is emotional in a way that few might expect.

Rick and Morty Season 7 Episode 3 SPOILER Breakdown
In the beginning of the episode, Rick is in a therapy session with Dr. Wong (Susan Sarandon) when he receives a call from the President (Keith David), summoning him for a special mission. Rick attempts to ignore the call, but the President is at the door because of the urgency of the situation. Sparks fly between the President and Dr. Wong, which disturbs Rick.
The President informs Rick that all of the residents of Virginia have become suspiciously happy and peaceful, suspecting some sort of cult has taken over. However, when the President reveals that he has put together a special team for the mission — including Dr. Wong, seemingly in an attempt to woo her — Rick voices his disgust and refuses to join.
The President and Dr. Wong visit Virginia, where it is soon revealed that the entire population of the state is under the control of a hive mind. After realizing that it was his ex, Unity (Christina Hendricks), Rick swoops in to save the President and Dr. Wong. Unity reveals that they have been attempting to get in contact with Rick because they found out he was trying to hunt Rick Prime again, which worried them.
The President cuts Virginia off with a dome, which severs the connection between Unity and the state’s population. Rick and Unity argue, and eventually they agree to leave, but warn Rick that the population is susceptible to being taken over by another hive mind unless they are released properly. Rick tells Unity just to leave.
Meanwhile, Dr. Wong tells the President that she is not interested in pursuing a relationship with him, explaining that he is too obsessed with finding approval. This causes the President to go mad, and he decides to take over the hive mind and use it to take over the country and earn everyone’s approval.
Realizing what he has done and that Unity is the only one who can help save the Earth, Rick enlists the help of Dr. Wong to convince them to stop the President. Despite it being a painful process, Unity helps free all of the citizens of the US from the President. Rick attempts to reconcile with Unity, but they tell him that they no longer trust him.
Rick goes home to his garage and listens to the voicemails he missed from Unity, who had tried to call him several times with genuine concern. He then goes to the White House to share a beer with the President, who admits that he needs to go to therapy.
In the post-credits scene, we see a character named Mr. Stabby — who was featured in a throwaway gag earlier in the episode as a talk show host whose sword arms kill his studio audience members — on an episode of “Gary Live” talking about how his audience members know the risk of attending his shows.
In the third episode of the season of Rick and Morty, it feels like we are finally getting to the meat of the story teased at the end of season 6: Rick’s search for Rick Prime. Although we still haven’t gotten to see that search in action, this episode’s conflict involving Unity is definitely driven by this conflict. It will be interesting to see how this storyline continues to play out.
