New stars and old will always agree on the fact that the preparation for a role is by far the hardest yet most important part of a project undertaken. Some stars, like Christian Bale, for example, take that process to a whole new level with their discipline of method acting, a practice that has made him a living legend in the industry.

But there are stars that either aren’t required to go the extremes to play a part in a film, or they simply don’t believe in such harsh practices to get into character. Among the latter is the Riverdale alum Charles Melton, who revealed that he doesn’t believe in method acting when it causes harm to you and the people you care about.

While method acting may sound like an extreme homage to the art of acting, it’s not for everyone to be comfortable with, even Christian Bale, who has made a name for himself with this practice, said that it’s too much for him to keep up with. Thus, when Charles Melton said he may never partake in this process, it didn’t come as a shock for many.

“I do have certain exercises that can separate the character from myself, and as I’m discovering how I like to work, I’m finding my technicality means I have the freedom to just let go. I don’t need to suffer. The idea of causing suffering and pain to others around you, in order to tell your story for the character… That is not my cup of chamomile tea.”

While he may not take it to the absolute limits and beyond in method acting as The Dark Knight star does, Melton still gave a wonderful performance in his latest film, which has created a buzz around the star for being in the race for an Academy Award nomination.
