Robert Downey Jr has made several improvisations throughout his run as Iron Man in the MCU, whether it’s his famous quote, “I am Iron Man,” or simply offering a blueberry to his co-star Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers. However, one of his ad-libs has stood out in terms of intensity, which took place in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame in a scene with the Captain America actor Chris Evans.
The movie reunites the fellow Avengers following the events of Civil War and Infinity War. The actor went on to improvise the scene with a single word as he confronts Captain America and calls him a “liar” to his face.
Robert Downey Jr. Improvised His Scene With Chris Evans in Avengers: Endgame
Tony Stark comes back to Earth in Avengers: Endgame. After losing the Titan battle and having been lost in space, Iron Man was physically and emotionally exhausted. However, upon returning, he finds his fellow Avengers still tracking Thanos in the hope of undoing The Decimation.
When Steve Rogers pushes him for some information on Thanos, Stark snaps at the super soldier and confronts him. He reminds him of the warnings of the imminent threat and how he said that they would fight and lose together. However, he was not with him when he fought and lost to the supervillain on Titan.
He ends the speech by calling Steve Rogers a “liar” to his face. The scene is no doubt the Iron Man actor’s one of the best scenes in the MCU, and Robert Downey Jr. improvised most of the scene, including the word “liar.”
The director of the film, Anthony Russo, has called it “one of Downey’s most inspired” moments during an interview with Empire. The Avengers: Endgame director also shared that the actor understood the scene very well, and they did not do it many times as Downey Jr. was expanding himself so much.
Robert Downey Jr.Almost Did Not Appear in Civil War
The events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame were followed by Captain America: Civil War, where the superhero team got into conflict over the Sokovia Accords. While Steve Rogers was against the agreement, Tony Stark agreed with the terms to keep the Avengers together.
However, The Russo Brothers later revealed that Robert Downey Jr. almost did not reprise his role in the 2016 Marvel movie, as he was not under contract to do Civil War. The directing duo shared that they had to convince him to star in the film.
“And he has to keep telling these stories, so he wants to play something compelling,” they shared on Variety’s The Big Ticket podcast. They shared that he was interested once he was told that he would “get to be a villain” and how it would impact his upcoming movies in the franchise.
Avengers: Endgame and Captain America: Civil War are available on Disney+.
